Diff types of koi
New to the hobby well new to taking it serious. Of the diff variety of koi apart from colour is there any diff In terms of size? Or is any variety likely to grow to the same adult size or a certain variety seems to be larger when adult than others ? Hope that question makes sense. Thanks for reading

It is a good question, I am also new to koi and fish keeping but I did do some reading on this and I think the subject is very vague as there are so many factors at play.
I would say these are the main factors in order for size
Bloodlines (genetics) /origin
Variety - solid coloured koi like Chagoi and ogon’s have the potential to grow larger but you still get some huge gosanke (kohaku, sanke, and showa) likely because these have been being developed and enhanced for some time. I believe some of the newer varieties like Kikokuryu have less chance to be large.
Water parameters/temperature
Environment
I’m sure there is a lot more too it than I have read so I’m interested in others views.
This is a good thread

I have found over the years. That plain colour fish seem to grow the largest.
Like chagoi and doitsu karashigoi.
Ogons.
I have a chag and doitsu karashigoi that are a good size. I used to have a couple of matalic ghost koi that grew large as well.the silver chrome ones.
Females are the way to go. They grow larger then males. More often then not.
Other wise it's all luck

Some great stuff there thanks again. Giving my pond a spring clean after spring and will be re stocking to add to my koi collection after I have removed the gold fish found a ornamental lake for them to go into owned by a family member. The pond is a 18,000ltr I have at home be ideal for koi alone an a grow along pond for some small ones just need to decrease the stock amount of goldfish they really have bred out of control lol

So that's roughly 4000 gallons. That's good enough for a koi pond lol. My pond is 4500
Gallons I have roughly 52 fish in there.
And adding some more in the spring. From my grow on. Well over stocked. But my filteration system can handle it. And setup
That's what it's all about lol. It's a mixture of fish my pond.26 koi and the rest mixed.
Orfs tench grass carp rudd.
The koi put the colour in the pond.

In my experience (although absolutely no guarantees), larger koi / easier to grow koi are the plain colours (with the exception of the platinum ogon). Chags, Mukashi, Karashigoi, Kigoi and Yamabuki to name a few.
As mentioned earlier in the thread, there are a number of factors which can assist / impact growth potential and maximisation, such as:
survival!
genetics / blood line
size of pond adequacy
filtration adequacy
Temperature
water quality
nutrition - quality of food and regular feeding patterns
Hope this helps a little...

Thanks Gaz!
Survival is a good one!
You specifically singled out platinum ogons as not getting large, Why is that?
My largest koi is a platinum Ogon and it’s a Beauty still young though.

our biggest two are doitsu Karashigoi and a maratan Kohaku, our platinum Ogon is catching up quite quickly though...
