I’ve used fishing line around the edges of a previous pond. It did work, although I actually caught a heron in it by the legs and had to cut it free once!

It very much depends on the design of your pond whether they decide to use it as a SmŲrgŚsbord or not.

one flew past my house today and my pond is still under polycarbonate...
...spring seems to be the season for them, probably nesting and building up for stores ready for mating.

Today must be one of them days.
Removed the netting from my pond as doing some work on it.
Popped in for a coffee and heron appears on roof of shed next to pond. Seen it in the neighbourhood but never near my pond before.
Trying to work around the covers for the rest of the day was a right pain i hate the mesh covers but unless i;m in the garden i think they are essential. Seems to be far more herons about.

like the seagulls figuring out it's easy pickings inland these days (as well as no fish in the sea...)

i reckon the herons have figured out it's much easier catching fish concentrated in a comparitively small koi pond compared to a lake...
i've watched herons hunt for days round a carp lake while i've been fishing and catch nothing....

Damn things - I used to dread every morning waking up and looking out of the landing window to check if Herons had arrived, even waking up early trying to catch them , the dreaded net I put on sorted it... my new pond now relies on the sun shade/sail and jump guards, thankfully not seen a Heron yet, long may that be the case <touch wood>

Like feline I use fishing line around my pond, but i haven't caught a heron. Did catch a duck once, looked out in the morning and there it was caught by its leg in the line. I had to pick it up while my wife cut the line away. When it was free I released it by throwing it up in the air thinking it would help it fly off but it just landed in the garden, and stood there making a lot of noise it's a good job I don't speak duck as i'm sure it was giving me some stick.
