    Jump guards

Hi all, so thinking of installing some glass jump guards around my pond rather than just sitting back and been complacent until the inevitable happens. My question is regarding the longest piece of glass guard. The front of my pond will have the longest piece approx 2.5 metres. I like the stainless posts were the glass slots in from the top. Is 2.5m too long for 10mm glass? I have a window of 1m in the middle of the front wall so if I would need 2 extra posts where the window starts and ends which would mean it's divided into 3 pieces of glass which basically doubles the cost. Any thoughts on this? Hoping i could go 1 piece at 2.5m

I'm thinking of doing similar, as I had one jump out and got munched by a fox a few months back.

I'd say go for perspex or poly carb, rather than glass. If one were to break for whatever reason, I wouldn't want shards of invisible glass in the pond.

Just a thought as you have a pergola, A guy I collected my filter from had a pergola and he had a big solid polycarbonate sheet attached via the 4 corners with rope, up to a pully on the middle then again down to a pully at the side so when he wasn't out at the pond not only was it safe from predators, but also from them jumping out. This is the route I would take with a pergola and still may do so if I end up building one. This way there is no worry of storing the polycarbonate over winter and I personally am not a great fan of the look with jump guards

Mine are 12mm toughened and polished all round glass - all 300 high and longest is circa 2.5m seen in the last photo

I did wonder about a worst case scenario if one would shatter, but same could be said for many a thing around the pond, walls etc. so I went with glass for scratch resistance and general upkeep/appearance - they will be draped with quadrupled/folded dust sheets when ever I cut the grass, along with widows that will have boards placed in front of them.

Thanks for the advice chaps after having a think about the suggestions I've decided to go polycarbonate with support posts at the front to stop the flex and fix some clamps to the pergola uprights which is a very cost effective solution for me.
I will post some pics when the materials arrive if I'm happy with the results

My perspex in the middle panel over the window spans the whole 2m width of the window so is around 220cm long (in 10mm perspex with stainless posts).
I found if I just use the clamps with their rubber inserts alone, over time that panel will flex slightly. But the clamps on mine also came with a peg to go through a drilled hole in the perspex. When I drilled mine and put the pegs in, it holds the perspex taught so hardly any flex in wind etc.

Ive not had any issue with them since installing. When they are clean you cant really even see them. My mother when she visited asked what was to stop the fish just jumping over the window. She couldn't even see that sheet at all

So a bit of an update on this thread, yesterday i finally collected my pond guards from the fabricators, after waiting almost a month for them to get the right material in stock. They are made from 10mm clear acrylic and cost £150 to make. The posts and corner brackets cost an additional £50, so all in all a cost effective way of protecting the fish. Much cheaper than laminated glass. I have just dry fitted for now and will fix the posts to the coping stones as soon as we get a break in the bad weather.

Reasonable prices that, I've two runs 3mtrs long that I need guards for, better start looking, have you got a link to where you bought them from and are the panel's clear panels, Perspex is very pricey, Cheers.
