So glad I covered the pond

I'm glad I covered up the pond, this fella (or lady) had visited a number of times yesterday, walking on top of the glass looking rather confused. No free meal here mate!

Had one of those buggers land on the handrail of my bridge last week... horrible things, I'm netted as he used to be a regular visitor to the goldfish pond that was here when we came and I have trouble with ducks also
Not seen our visitor for a while until last week.. chased him off and set up the water jetter so hopefully he wont be back too soon.

So, another good reason for winter covers indeed.

Herons are actually very agile flyers, they can 'helicopter' into wherever it is they want to land. We have a couple of chickens, they make superb early warning watchdogs, as soon as the heron appears they start squawking.
