They are not really designed to be in a moving environment even if lightweight media in there I think. The titanium submersibles are much better for a pond environment due to generally robustness. Titanium’s also don’t crack if you turn them on when not submerged like the aquarium heaters do (they just melt your media).
Aquarium heaters are never earthed, which always struck me as a bit odd
Agree feline. I have titanium heater in my qt.
After years ago one going on me with glass one years ago.
    Never glass again.

Today's Air temperature is the same as yesterday but pond is up to 15.8C so it has risen 0.7 degrees over 24 hours and I think there's more to go.

So the 300w is definitely doing something.

Think you have to be careful with temperature fluctuations, moreso rises, you probably know this so I'm guessing you're watching it?

That's the part I'm interested in Tom with the heater.

My pond has fluctuated as much as 8 degrees over a coupler of days so I'm hoping the heater absorbs some of that.

Air temperature high today is 11.5, pond temperature is 15.5.

Each time I do a water test I record the pond temp. What really surprised me is how similar the pond temps have been throughout this year against last year. A few fluctuations between March and April, and October onwards, but generally almost identical on average.

This time last year pond was at 13C, so heater and polycarbs definitely helping.

I noticed a few specs of condensation inside the heater glass, so I suspect this isn't going to be the cheap solution to reduce temp fluctuations that I hoped for and I don't want to spend money even on a cheap pond heater as given the option I'd rather go the whole hog and get an ASHP, which I can't afford lol.

What to go full drum and bio and lose the nexus ? . Get a fair bit to put towards tho selling a nexus and drop in . Any reason ? More bio for the footprint?

Drop in drum is working at its limits to filter my pond.

Cleaning every 6 minutes in summer. Not too bad now though at around 22 minutes

In summer I'm draining 200 litres every 3 days just from the drum overspray topping up the pond.

Emailed Draco asking whether I should upgrade to solum 16 or 25 and to my surprise he came back suggesting I change mesh to 77 microns which he claims will still keep water Crystal clear but would significantly reduce the number of cleans, so that's a consideration as well.

Obviously you're right AJ, losing the Nexus means buying a bio, another expense, and bio won't hold anywhere close to what the Nexus holds so I'd effectively be reducing pond volume by 300+ litres.

So at the moment I'm just thinking about the options and probably won't act until next summer unless a second hand bargain comes up.

I don t understand that lol. I have never lost water . With my old drum. Which was 70 micron.
And newer model drop in. 50 odd micron.
The water stays the same level on both drums. Never lose water. Only the wash sprey down the waste shute.
Also even high feeding 20 minute washes.
It's now washing every 40 minutes. Because I have cut feeding to half.
I have had my trickle in turned off for a week now. And levels are the same lol.

When built is the sprey bar been set right.
At the right angle on the wash. To stop over sprey. Back to pond lol. And is the nexus. Set level. That's the only thing I can think of that causes the water to go back to pond lol.

As you know I had problems with controller
Altering my levels with the main pond pump. Since I changed the controller. The levels stay the same now. Fingers crossed.

If I had just built the pond again. And could afford it. I love the draco.
But I would have gone for a seperate drum
And seperate bio tank. Also I would have
Insulated the pond before fiber glassing.
And built heating into the system. From the house heating. Some how .
They are the mistakes I have made. I did nt
Know then what I know now.

Good of tony to suggest what he has. Top man.

    Cheers @freddyboy

The jets are pointing more or less spot on, the end ones lose a bit of spray up the edge of the drum, but obviously some spray splashes off the surface of the mesh and goes down the outside, a tiny amount but couple this with a wash every 6 minutes and you can see why the pond level increases every few days.

I have said before that my water running level is about 10mm below the centre of the waste tray so lowering the Nexus 10mm would improve it but that's a lot of work for a small gain so I've never got round to doing it.

The drum performance is faultless, it is literally the overwhelming amount of waste my koi produce that is causing the frequent washes and this could well be down to the 51% protein Top Koi I fed this year.

I've stopped feeding that now for winter so will use up the rest in spring and then buy some Saki for next summer and suspect there will be less waste and the drum will clean less.

Obviously another option is to slow down the flow but all that would do is allow waste to build up faster than it is being removed I suspect.

A TDS meter with a temperature function, a floating pond thermometer (those common black ones with string coming from them) and a fish tank thermometer.

All 3 give completely different readings up to a degree apart so I average them.

Pond currently at 16.1C with the 300w heater still going. Today's date last year the pond was on 13C.

Those thermometers are tiny, smaller than a match box, be interesting to see how well they work, but at two for the price of a couple beers its not to much of a risk.

These are what I've used for 3 years:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07...b_b_asin_title

They are surprisingly accurate and very easy to read with nice big digits. I use 2 at a time to ensure consistency of readings. They are not waterproof but I've accidently gotten them wet, and even dropped them where they've broken apart and put them back together again. Still work! I've also never changed the batteries yet and they are used pretty much every day.

I love having the redundancy of 4, and have often needed to use them all when I've got fish in bowls or the Intex. Great for ensuring acclimatisation when transferring fish.

I've now got an Oase Proficlear that gives me a constant 2 digit temp reading in my filter house, and these aquarium thermos have been in line with that without fault.

Can't knock 'em for price and versatility.
