I have the same ones as koize. Cheap as chips.
I use 2 in the grow on. And one on my 5000
Gallon pond.
And have 3 spare. Ready to replace. When they pack up.
Used them for 6 years now. I just replace them every year. Even if there still working or not. When I change my UV bulbs.

I fear this may be a dumb question but which way up did you fit the sheeting?
It comes with Uv protection on one side, not sure if the koi need the U.v. for colour enhancement or whether they need protecting from it.

Bought mine new and the cellophane wrap showed which side was top. Can't see any other obvious way to tell.
I wouldn't have thought it would make a huge difference which way round you fit it since UV and sunburn on koi isn't such an issue during the months we cover for.

A difficult question that would probably get different answers.
I would favour allowing UV to get through because I've had fish lose colour when light is completely blocked out, but understand that light and UV aren't the same thing.
On the other hand koi in mud ponds don't get much UV penetration and their colour is fine.
Allowing UV has to be better than completely blocking it though.

I always thought the UV protection to the top or outside of the polycarbonate was to protect the plastic from UV rather than what's on the other side of it.
It may degrade quicker if using it 'upside down'.

That sounds logical, didn't think about it like that.
I randomly searched for the answer to that point and a Q&A section of a Polycarb site said this, but you never know if its accurate 'cos they just wanna sell the stuff:
Q. Why choose multiwall polycarbonate for a pool enclosure?
A. Light in weight, polycarbonate is easy to handle and install. Panels are incredibly strong and will not shatter like glass if damaged. Thermal insulation properties keep the enclosed pool area warmer. The UV-treated outer surface provides sun protection, reducing the risk of sunburn.Last edited by RS2OOO; 30-11-2020 at 05:22 PM.

Just a belated update to this thread as to how the covers performed.....
Made a massive difference throughout winter. On average temps were around the 12C mark (with 300w aquarium heater running with stat set to 12C.)
I gradually reduced stat to 8C at the coldest part of winter to give the koi a period of cold temps and it took quite a number of days for the pond to drop down and at no point did it drop below 8C even though ambient temps were below zero for a number of days.
The hippo tape I used between the poly sheets as "hinges" performed really well and lasted all winter. When I lifted the covers in April the tape was still stuck solid and was such a pain to remove that I gave up peeling it and just cut the panels apart with a stanley blade.
So all in all the covers were a great success.

Has anyone else made the decision not to cover their pond? When covered I found I was having issues in spring and sometimes losing fish. Since I stopped putting the covers on I have had no problems. I only heat to 10 degrees, and the extra cost of heating uncovered is offset by not having to pay to replace fish.
