My polycarb turned up today 2 x 3,5 x 1.25 x 0.25 l went with Roofing warehouse in the end, I've bought loads off them and it worked out cheaper by about 30quid.

My lad took delivery, but wasn't home when I got in from work and only knew it arrived when I went in garage, Mrs then said oh aye it came this morning, good job I had to go into the garage doh !!

    Hi RS and everyone,

what are your ponds holding up at with your poly covers on ? RS i am at 15.3c right now and no heating at all, what are you like with that 100w running? is it holding temp or making any difference do you think ? i have dropped 1 degree in the past .7 of a degree in the past 3 days if that helps for comparison....... i am considering a 300w aquarium heater you used, any recommendations as to which one ? are they very delicate ? cheers Steve.

    Hi Steve,

Well I just went out to check temp for you and could have killed myself!

My pond has always suffered from rapid temp loss especially without covers, so I just checked and its at 15.1C which is much better than what it would have been without covers, no doubt about that, but since yours is at 15.3C without heat I wondered if the heater was a waste of time.

Stuck my hand in the Nexus to pull the heater out and at first glance I thought it was covered in brown algae / biofilm and thought that happened fast as last time I checked it just over a week ago it looked as good as new.

Then on closer inspection I realised the light wasn't on and it was full of water .

It was still plugged in and I let go of it pretty fast I can tell you! The "brown algae" was actually burn marks inside.

I immediately counted all the fish and from what I could see under the covers all are ok.

Since day time temperatures are forecast between 11 - 13C for all of this Week I've now plugged in the 300w heater to see whether it can hold or increase from the current 15.1C and will report back at the end of the week.

Not good mate! Glad you didn't get a shock!

Out of interest was it a decent branded heater or a cheap one? Not that it matters, I've just heard horror stories for the cheaper heaters on the market.

It wasn't a cheap heater as far as cheap heaters go, it was purchased from a garden centre, maybe £22 and only 100w, that said I don't recognize the brand.

The rubber seal at the top just pulls off, then "sealant" in the top of the glass where the wires go in has become porous almost like ceramic.

Bloody hell, you was lucky there RS, did it trip the fuse as I take it the power must have blown, got to be so careful water and electric's don't mix, I'm always dubious about putting my hand in my sump pit, especially if the waste water hasn't been pumped out, I unplug and check it out of the sump just to make sure.

Didn't trip anything, and RCDs fitted. I'd like to think it would have tripped if I got a shock.

Bloody hell, you would think that once the integrity of unit was broken and water had ingressed it would have tripped

I had one in a tank few year back that went . I was sat on the sofa and looked at the tank and none of the fish seemed them selves clamped bottom sitting really stressed when to the tank to have a closer look and could barely touch the tank it was that hot . The glass of the heater was smashed and some how just heated to near boiling point lost 2 of 3 fish
    It never tripped or anything

I know I've said this before, but besides cost, the potential for failure of the heating of a pond, either in sudden drop or over heating, through mechanical breakdown or power cut, is what keeps me hoping that poly carbs and insulation will be all that's needed to keep my fish above 10c, and preferably at 13c all winter.

After the stres and hourly vigils through the night I had in summer when I was heat ramping my fish with a Lay Z Spa heater in an Intex for Costia, I honestly hope I never have to heat again! Winter Polycarbonate covers for a Wooden Sleeper Pond

BTW I've had an Interpet heater fail from water ingress in an aquarium without tripping anything. Luckily didn't zap the fish.

I’ve had an aquarium heater smash inside a moving bed filter in the past. Gave me a bit of a buzz when I touched it but obviously I didn’t die

They are not really designed to be in a moving environment even if lightweight media in there I think. The titanium submersibles are much better for a pond environment due to generally robustness. Titanium’s also don’t crack if you turn them on when not submerged like the aquarium heaters do (they just melt your media).
Aquarium heaters are never earthed, which always struck me as a bit odd
