all fish disappeared
Hello I am totally mystified and wonder if anyone can help. I bought 6 goldfish (2 to 3 inches) 3 days ago to stock my new pond. They have been hiding under the rocks for a couple of days but were happily swimming around a bit at 11 am this morning. By 2 pm when I went to check I couldn't see any - I have moved every rock and they have all vanished. The pond goes from 2 ft to 3 ft deep with near vertical sides. Anybody any idea how all the fish could disappear in the middle of the day?

If they are definitely not in the pond, two options spring to mind.Heron or in the filter(depending what inlet you have)...

I would guess they are still there.
Or could have gone down the bottom drain?
Or if not gravity fed maybe hiding around the pump or pipework?
Can't imagine any bird going to great lengths to catch all 6 in a 3 foot deep pond. Unless you have otters but I doubt they would bother either.
Or maybe hiding in a crease if you have a liner.

I have a pump attached to a skimmer - I have checked the skimmer and they are not in there and I can't see how else they would get in to the filter

That's what I think. I have checked the filter and they are not in there. I am fairly convinced they are not in the pond though as I have gone around the whole thing with a fine tooth comb. I did see some black birds hopping around the waterfall and I have seen a rat in the garden recently. I did perform a 50% water change this morning but cannot see how this would make them disappear. Ordered a net off Amazon now and I may try again next week. I didn't realise keeping fish alive was so difficult!

Another thing is to sneak up on your pond and watch from a distance or from a bedroom window, or leave your phone or camcorder filming over the edge and leave it for a bit. You might catch them coming out of a hiding place if they are still there.

I’ll bet the heron has taken some, those things are evil and will quickly clear a pond if left without a net.

it's amazing how good they are at hiding taking into account their bright colour
