Filter query
Hi there, new to the forum,
I’m currently running a pump fed Oase Screentex 36 filter in a 25,000l pond set up stocked with quite large koi. The pond has been running for a few years with no issues and not a newbie to the koi scene, but I’ve never managed to be able to get the water crystal clear so was wondering what the forum would recommend to improving the clarity of the water. I have a surface skimmer but only the Oase floating type where the basket has to be emptied which as I have a natural type of pond (ie plenty of plants) is quire often.
Would additional bio filtration help for the finer clearer water, any info would be helpful.
Thanks in advance Kev

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like a nice sized pond.
I've never heard of the screentex filter, only the screenmatic, so can't comment on that.
Assuming you have a UV running I think the ultimate answer here will be to buy a drum filter.
What size UV(s) do you have?

Hi, thanks for getting back to us.
Sorry Typo its the Oase 36 Screenex, (the one before the screenmatic, basically same thing but have to manually clear the screen) its has a 36W UV.
have been looking at the drum filter route, but was looking at less costly route if poss. Was thinking of maybe a separate filter line for skimmer as an option still going through various items on the forum, plenty of info to take in!
Cheers

I think a few people run Easypods on their skimmer lines, but I'm doubtful that would be enough to fix your clarity problems although it would certainly improve them.
Is the clarity bad due to fines (as in fine particles) or is it green/brown water?
Do you change the UV bulb annually? If you haven't changed it for a while that would be the first thing to try.
I looked at the screenmatic and compared to the Nexus when I built my pond and decided on the Nexus. Only thing is, you'd need a 320 which is a big old lump, and still a lot of money to spend which would make a drum the better long term investment.
A lot of people say the EA Pond Bombs improved their water clarity in mature ponds. I'm doubtful of the claims, but again for £12 that could be something to try.

I think the bottom line is for 25K litres, you need a LOT more filtration. What's your hourly turnover?

If your DIY skills are OK then another possible option is a barrel filer system and if built right you can start with one static bed filter and one fluid bed filter and add more of each as required.
This thread is worth a look as it's quite well detailed -
