    Electric fencing

Hi chaps, seeing as my pond will now be above ground with a 25cm ledge that runs right round it, I'm looking at heron deterrents. I'm near to a resorvoir that has large numbers of herons visiting and in fact the old pond was cleared out by them several times.

The previous owners had built a 50 cm High cage around the pond that was made of chicken wire - effective, but a real eyesore.

I'm looking at the below kit and looking for some advice, will this be effective? I am thinking of combining this with a net across the pond. The arms in this kit are 80cm and go into the pond at an angle.

    Electric fencing

Jesus, a pond might be a bad idea then!!

Shotgun or a couple of reels of high quality fishing line, I'm joking about the Shotgun...

    Electric fencing

A nice pegola might be a thought and some other bits around the garden to put them off landing (plastic heron - not my thing really).

You will be fighting a loosing battle I fear; once they know...

How are you building the pond also, or have you built it; you might want to think about the design?

It's already built Rob. I might put a sail up above it also. Looking to deter as much as possible.

Yes, that style of electric fence will work, and doesn't look too awful. It is worth stringing a couple of the strings across the centre of the pond from opposite supports too. It is a bit of a pain though when you come to need to net a fish- you might need to remove part or all of the fence to do it.

I caught a heron on my cctv in the first 2yrs of my pond running ,it was stalking the koi jumping on the wall .its a half in ground half above pond ..

so so I got a cattle electric fence off eBay ,and once fitted left it for A year and then took it down as no longer had visitors ..

yes they work great haha also there is a nesting site few miles away ,but they seem to stay away ..
no horrible looking netting etc ever used on mine .

For mounting I used some plastic posts that came with the fence ,I cut them down and screwed them to the pond wall and ran two rows around the the wall ..

if you have dogs dogs be careful mine don't go near the pond now either

We have a dog who hates birds, and the pond is visible out of the patio doors, so the dog has a great view of the pond from the living room.
He even yells at pigeons who perch on next-door-but-one's roof.
    No trouble with herons

On a more serious note, I use a net, but that's also because my fish have jumped in the past.

Ordered the kit from electric fencing.co.uk this afternoon. Should be here before the weekend hopefully, so will let you all know how it goes. I bought a decent net from East Riding Koi too, arrived last week, came in at £128 for a 6m x 5m net. It does look quite heavy duty and well made.

Fence up this afternoon, took about an hour to fit. The posts are 80cm each and made from plastic coated metal. Three screws hold them onto the ledge around the pond and allowed me to tension them quite tight. Getting the wire on was easy enough and it's all plugged in now.

I have been in farming in my youth and i donot like the poly wire,
my friend has a pond which the herons spy from about two miles away so he made his own eletric fence kit.
But the arms are made of stainless steel and sometimes the fence shorts out.
but what he did use was stainless steel mig wire which is quite cheap from say Halfords.
now you would have to make sure you could get it fitted to the isulators but most important is that you need some earth wires as well. because birds donot coduct electricty like say cows or sheep.
also the heron has a very long neck and can reach over with out touching the wires and all so they donot sniff at thing like cows sheep and dogs.
but be aware that kids will allways fiddle or touch even if told not to.
also if some comes around that has a pacemaker fitted to thier heart it wont do then any good at all.

all i have done is put some stainless mig wire above my pond where i think the herons would try to land and up to now that has worked and also all the other birds can see it some how and donot get tangled in it.

thats my thoughts right or wrong.

The fence angles inwards and there is a 'false' earth wire fitted all the way round because a heron or any other animal landing in the ledge would not get a shock without it. So it's doubtful that a heron could reach over and into the pond.

There are quite a number of risks around most things, Kids are also at risk from the water itself, etc, etc.

Looking at that kit, I'd say you stand a good chance of seeing the Herons off...I don't believe you'll have a problem..good luck!

Looks good, similar to what I've used in the past. You can get a reel of black coloured wire that actually doesn't show up so much against the pond water.

    morning all
i have a big heron that visits us. its mainly historical as when i only had a few goldfish i didn't worry about it and he came very frequently. now the koi are in the pond i have set up 2 foot high stakes of thin bamboo. with a 2mm hole drilled in the top and green gardening wire threaded through and around the majority of the pond. this is all that is needed. he still comes but he can't get in anymore. the mix of bamboo and green wire is a more natural look and blends into the garden. it could be created with fishing line and be even less visible. i have seen timber frames set up across the pond at about 7feet high and threaded with fishing line, that also works.
