Thread: Water Testing

    Water Testing

    To meet the needs of fellow koi keepers my step daughter (Charlotte) and I are starting a small business to carry out water testing on koi ponds.
    We have a lot of experience between us and some excellent professional electronic testing equipment.

    We think there’s a need for this service for the following reasons:

    • Some people don’t want to buy expensive sophisticated electronic equipment, they use drop test kits or strips to test. To give a degree of confidence it is recommended that these results are double checked against more sophisticated methods from time to time. We can do that for you.

    • Sometimes it’s hard to understand what’s going on with your water chemistry when the results take big steps. For example, some tests go from zero to 0.25mg/l nitrite in one step whilst the recommended long term limit is 0.20mg/l. How do you know if you’re within the limits or not? We can help with that.

    • Some people don’t want to test at all; we’re going to make that a realistic option for people.

    • Often koi dealers will refuse to test other people’s pond samples (bio security), use fairly simplistic methods (drop tests and strips) or charge large amounts of money for the service

    We are offering a basic test which includes pH, total ammonia / ammonium, nitrite & nitrate. These will be performed in duplicate to ensure quality – where there is disparity a third test will be carried out thus ensuring accuracy and precision. Further ‘plus’ tests will also be offered which will include all the basic tests and also phosphate, KH & GH.
    We will provide advice based on the results, if you supply your own test results we will comment on the differences and if you provide pond temperature at the time of taking the sample we will calculate toxic NH3 (based on ammonia, pH and temperature)

    We send you a 250ml water bottle, instructions and a prepaid jiffy bag for your water sample to be collected and returned to us. The cost of the tests including all postage and packaging and the bottle (new bottle each time to ensure no potential contamination issues) will be £17 for the basic service and £22 to include the additional ‘plus’ tests. Results will be emailed to you along with our view of your water chemistry. For regular users of this service we will also maintain a spreadsheet with graphs to show results over time.

    We're also offering multi buy
    Basic Test:
    1 = £17, 2 = £30, 5 = £69
    Plus Test:
    1 = £22, 2 = £40, 5 = £94

    If you are interested in using us this service you can contact me here via a PM or email Charlotte at charlotte@pondwatertesting.com
    Alternatively, simply order via PayPal by sending the appropriate amount to me at kitching_john@yahoo.co.uk stating it’s for water testing. We will get a proper business PayPal account set up if this takes off but for now we’re just testing the water (sorry )

    We would also be very interested to hear people’s opinions of this service, as we believe there is a real need, do you?

    [edit] 9/11/14 removed testing only option and added multi buy option.

    Hell John thats a good idea . I only use the very basic tests there ok but I do feel it would be better if I could have a more advance way of getting the water tested but I am not in a position to pay for the equipment. I use to use a dealer near me to check my water every so often to make sure I was getting the right readings but I must say it was a pain taking it in every time and was not as cheep as what your planing. oh and not as advance if I am honest. so will sure give you a go mate. top idea

    Sounds like a good idea John but not for me as I’m running RO I wouldn’t be without my electric gadgets testing on a daily basis.
    Good luck with the new venture.

    Good idea, I hope it gets off the ground for you.
    I'd be scared to send you my water for testing as all my parameters are perfect, according to my NT Labs tests that is .

    I forgot to mention if you don't have a PayPal account that's no problem. We can send a PayPal invoice that can be paid without a PayPal account, bank transfer is ok too or even a cheque if you're prepared to wait a while
    Thanks for the orders folks.

    looks like it a trip to doctors .......to get some sample bottles

    John could i say get 5 at a time and just send them back when I need too. that way I can save time if I have a pond problem and need to make sure its not the water that is in the wrong? It is just I like to test the water first before I do a scrape as it can stress my fish out.

    You most certainly can Vince.
    Give me a shout if you want me work it out properly but off the top of my head it would probably save about £12 assuming when we post it it would still go as a small parcel. You'd get five bottles and five return envelopes then you could send them back to suit yourself.

    Thanks Vince.
    BTW, I'm thinking of another couple of outlets for sales and in both cases the prices will be higher than here (due to additional costs).
    Hopefully there will still be some interest.

    i would think so John . I love the idea of having someone re test my pond water if only to show I am doing it all right and giving the fish the best quality of water I can .
