Hi guys , I'm knew to this pond keeping hobby. I've had my pond for approximately two months now . The reason I wanted a pond is because I'm a keen carp angler and I wanted my own fish to study and learn from . My intentions were to stock it with coarse fish , roach tench, carp etc. the pond is 6m x 3.5m with the deepest part being 1.4m , I've worked it out at about 5300 Gallons . After filling the pond I left it for two weeks before putting any fish in it . I saw some fish advertised in the local paper and I purchased 6 x 6 inch Harikawe koi . I then purchased 8 larger carp which are between 3 and 11lb in weight giving me 14 fish in total . I added the six small koi then a week later I purchased the 8 bigger fish ! After I added them I had an algae bloom and the water clarity was poor ! So I purchased some blagdons clear pond and added it ! After about five days the condition improved but it wasn't great . I noticed that a small koi wasn't moving much and always seemed to be in the same spot . He died several days later . When I looked at him his mouth looked completely rotten and it had a pea size sore / ulcer on his back . I buried the fish and continued to monitor the others. After several days I noticed a small ulcer on the side of another small koi and a few fish were beginning to flash ! I netted the small koi and to my horror each one had ulcers on . I gave them a salt bath for 24hrs and treated their wounds . They seemed really happy in the smallish container . I purchased a water testing kit and got the following results . I will also cover full spec of filter etc
Ph 8.6
Ammonia 18oc 0.25 (2.5)
Nitrate 20
Nitrite 0.40
5300 gallons
5 koi 6 inches long
1 Common carp 12lb
7 carp between 3lb - 6lb
30000l pices pump and pressure filter running into a cascade
17kg salt added
All the fish are back in the pond now I've added the salt to help the koi and to reduce the nitrite , u also did a 10% water change . I've tested nitrite over three days and it remains dangerously high ! Please help . I clean the filter weekly and backwash it everyday . Please help

I'm sure that your going to get the help u need from many of the experience koi keepers here. I'm fairly new to this so feel other member will give better advice . To start with your pond and filter needs time to mature and when introducing new fish this should be over a long time period to give your filter time to cope with the increase of waste load. I hope u get it sorted soon, good luck

Hi We have inherited a large ornamental pond. We managed to find someone to renovate it, he suggested concrete, however it is still leaking and we were unable to plant it up. Amazingly the koi are still surviving inspite of the quagmire they swim in. We have bought aerators and have been trying unsuccessfully to find someone to help us. We are novices. I have noticed that the large koi appears to have cloudy eyes.
In an attempt to arrange an interim until the pond is working correctly I have ordered a small swimming pool 10ft diameter. I have two questions Do i need to treat all the fish with chemicals and do we need to isolate them from the pool first? We are also very nervous about trying to catch them to transfer them. The pool has a filter and we will aerate it. We have been told work could start in September, but we have been promised before… Hence our diy attempt.

Bit too far away from me I’m afraid but hopefully someone will be a bit more local. In the interim do you have water tests and the ability to do mucous scrapes and a microscope?
