    Hikui - treat or euthanise

    Hi all

Would greatly appreciate some advice from those with more experience than me.

Had this koi for 21 years and he has lesions on his skin that have been getting progressively worse over the past 5 years in particular. Presume they are hikui.

He’s been looking quite ill and uncomfortable for a few months now. Just before my recent run in with Alparex he seemed to be behaving more normally and was eating well at least. But now he seems more unhappy than ever, alternating between drifting head down and charging around the pond. He might occasionally eat a few pellets but very half heartedly.

as you can see from the photo he has three main lesions, with by far the worst between head and dorsal fin. Looks as though the skin is breached completely here and open to the muscle layer (though I’m no expert).

Really not sure whether to attempt to treat (sedate, clean wound and cover with propolis) which I have never done before or whether it would be kinder to euthanise him (which would be very sad as fond of him since he was one of the first koi I ever bought).

Would really value advice on which route to take here if possible.

    Thanks

It looks very thin. Iíd just make sure the pond and filter is as clean as possible and put in a weekly double dose of Virkon to keep bacteria load low and let nature do its thing.

I only had a koi with similar level of lesions and I thought it was a goer until the Virkon dosages went in and after summer it healed miraculously but with a massive scar

Thanks for your reply. Never tried Virkon so could definitely give it a go.

    Check this one : Hikui

Virkon is a broad spectral anti bacterial anti viral and anti fungal disinfectant. UV off for 8hrs. Standard dose 5g per 1000g. I always do double dose sometimes twice per week during spring. 10-20% WC is recommended between doses but I donít always bother

Thanks for this. Doesn’t Virkon knock the filters back if used so frequently?

My experience is - single dose no noticeable impact on bio, double dose twice a week has marginal impact on nitrite during feeding peak in summer when bio is at max capacity. But I only do repeated double dose on spring during aeromonas alley
