What I found in the past was when I got someone to come round and do an annual pond check the results for some tests were different from my results. 02 was the main one and what I realised was, he's driving around every day or at least to and from various locations with his testing kit in his van where as my test kit sits in one place most of the time. His were constantly being shaken up and mine weren't so his results were more accurate than mine. I started to give my test kit a reasonable shake before each test to see if that helped and I think it did. Just could never get a proper 02 reading. I knew it was OK but all I was ever getting was a reading of 5. There was loads of surface disturbance and extra aeration in the pond and I even tried what Manky Sanke suggested to prove the test kit but still couldn't get a reading other than 5. So I stopped testing for 02 after that.

It's always a good idea to stick to the same test kit as that way you can get readings you can rely on and see a pattern of results over time. I only changed kits if I don't like the way they test or find there's an issue with them like leaky test tubes or difficult colour chart comparison.

Well I bought the NT Labs one specifically because it had the KH / GH included, It's not bad but things I had found:

    • If you didnt clear the air in the top the of the bottle or fully turn it upside down and give it a shake, it would contain a bubble sometimes giving you 1 and a bit drops.
    • Specifically with the NH3 - My 3 bottles seemed to be different drop size?
    • Plastic tubes started to crack/split
    • Supposedly upto 200 tests? No where near it.

API comes with a lot more reagent by the looks of it? just need to buy the NO3 seperate.

A lot more people use this, and must be for a reason so happy to give this a whirl.

Hope you all had a good weekend, Just a quick update:

Got my trickle system in and running over the weekend. Setup to do around 15% a week.

Did my water tests Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

    NH3 - 0.25
    NO2 - 0
    NO3 - 0
    pH - 8.2 / 8.5 (lower end of 8.0)

Unfortunately the flashing started happening again on Saturday evening, I did a scrape on the biggest offender and found 2 or 3 of these little buggers:

I dont think it's white spot? Looks more like Oodinium which I havent heard much about?

I did another scrape on another fish just to check and found the same although there was a few tric on the 2nd fish. I couldn't see any of these moving again so I presume they are dead from the previous PP treatment and just waiting to fall off? This is just my thoughts as I havent seen any other tric on any other scrapes.

I don't know why your readings appear to be all over the place unless it's different test kits?

I know you've now got a trickle in and out set up so maybe that's already having an effect? Just seems a bit too quick to me though unless you've changed massive amounts of water last week before adding the trickle in and out?

Parasites aren't something I know a lot about apart from knowing what tric, flukes and costia look like.

I think your best option now is try to find someone local enough to you to come and have a look at your setup etc.

You might be better starting another thread asking that question as it's more likely to get noticed.

You could always put a link to this thread on it.
