Fish starting to cover in algea

    Hi,

New pond commissioned in the winter and as the sun is now coming out algea is starting to grow. That's fine and normal, however what I'm concerned about is the fish are starting to cover in algea, particularly 2 large orf, see picture...

When I have seen algae growing on a fish it has been because the fish has fungus, the algae grows in the fungus. Normal treatment with koi would be FMG but I don't think it can be used with Orfe.

I'd also check all your water parameters as something is more than likely causing the fungus in the first place. I've no experience of Orfe so hopefully someone will come along who can advise better.

Parameters are good except phosphate is around 1 instead of ideal 0.

Phosphate unlikely to have any bearing in this.

Main causes of fungus are I believe..

    Poor water quality
    Stress
    Rapid temperature swings
    PH swings
Injury sites caused by parasites or bumps / scrapes etc.

Other things to check then are I think.. PH throughout the day, scrapes for parasites. Are you dechlorinating? Are water changes being carried out regularly?

If above checks out I'm at a bit of a loss, but something needs to be done, as its affecting more than one fish I'd be tempted to try a whole pond treatment that is safe for all fish, perhaps Blagdon Anti Fungus & Bacteria that is dosed daily for several days.

My worry is that there is an underlying cause such as parasites and so by going straight into the fungal treatment it isn't being addressed.

I'm still hoping others will chime in because to be honest there are folk on here a lot more experienced than me when it comes to fish health.

It could possibly be stress as a result of the move and new environment, different water parameters etc. One fish already got droopsy and died.

I've got some blagdom tonic salt and planned to give the 2 with fungus a bath. Can anyone tell me what the correct dosage is?
