It has a condenser, a proper back light and a mechanical stage. But you need to find out if it has fine focus as well as course focus, and what magnifications the lenses are and the eyepiece to see if it’s in the right ballpark for the size of the koi parasites. You will need around x100 for the larger critters and x400 ideally for costia. You multiply the lens strength by the eyePiece strength to get this figure. I would not recommend you buy it without knowing for sure that it’s got what it needs.

You might not be able to buy from the UK easily, but Germany and Holland both have serious koi keepers whose suppliers I would have thought you could easily order from?

I have found this on Amazon France and Germany, at around 80€, obviously new with a guarantee and it suggests it gives up to 1000 times magnification.

    • [High Magnification] Science microscope with WF10x & WF25x eyepiece and optical lens: 4x, 10x, 40x, rotating monocular head provides six magnification levels: 40x, 100x, 250x, 400x and 1000x. High-quality optics can reproduce improved visual quality and a sharp image.
    • [Dual Light LED Lighting] Composite double light microscope has incoming and transmitted LED light sources that illuminate both opaque objects from above and translucent samples from below and completely visible. The lower LED light is regulated by a turntable to operate easily. (Batteries not included).
    • [Easy to Focus & 6 Colorful Filters] 6 different color filters built into a rotating disc - no need to dye the slides. The children's microscope is easy to focus, you just need to rotate the focus button slowly to see clear images.
    • [Professional Design & High Quality Material] 38° inclined eyepiece with 360° rotating monocular head reduces eye and neck strain, provides a comprehensive view. Metal base and sturdy handle frame ensures vibration-free operation of the microscope.
    • Educational gift for children: Each biological microscope comes with Science Kits approx. 52 pieces, children can see different samples through the microscope. The ideal gift for children. If you have any questions or problems, please contact us. EMARTH offers 360 day warranty

No, that microscope is a toy. You need a real one I’m afraid.
You really need one with a condenser below the stage.

Ive found this one on Amazon.de that would be what you need and has all the features. The monocular version is fine unless you want to spend the extra to use 2 eyes. It’s a bit more expensive than the Apex would be in the UK but has very similar spec.

Firstly let me thank all those that have contributed to this posting, believe me I do appreciate you taking the time and trouble to help me out, I have a new water test kit and all the parameters are within perfect results, according to the accompanying literature, so that element is fine, however I think there might be a little confusion over this jumping issue. The rest of the ponds occupants, might break the surface on a very insignificant number of times through ought the year, but as a general rule, are reasonably well behaved. This particular specimen jumped once and landed up on a side wall, subsequently falling out, and has not been right since that happened. In fact a lot of the other occupants are now found laying on the bottom at sunrise, immediately doom and gloom sweeps across me, but when you consider that the other week we had a particularly unseasonably warm spell, which saw a great deal of activity, this was followed by a normal time of the year cold snap, especially at night, so to me these poor buggers don't know where they are. Coupled with the fact that my water is absolutely gin clear, and is normally carrying a heavy amount of green matter, makes it easy to spot something which I am told is normal during a cold snap, which otherwise, I would not have seen. In the meantime the jumper still spends a lot of time on his side at the bottom, and I suggest he has a swim bladder problem, so whether he will recover with warmer weather or I am seeking a small intex pool so as I can warm him up a bit and try and help him. He does have regular forays to the surface but once he stops propelling himself he starts to sink tail first. Microscope I will get one asap, but at the moment I am not sure parasites are a problem, but better safe than sorry.

It could just be the case the other fish were asleep if they were all sat motionless near the bottom at first light? Especially if they are all active the rest of the time?

Your thoughts about the one laying over on its side sounds about right to me regarding its swim ladder. Unfortunately, unless you can get it into a heated salted tank (and even then there's still a good chance it won't recover), it's outlook does not look good.

I noticed that once the sun hit a certain corner of the pond the lot of them appeared and stayed swimming around there for ages, that's what gave me the thought about the temperature, I am trying to source something to put the other one in don't want to lose him if it's unavoidable, someone said peas are a good cure can't think why.

    Fingers crossed for you.

I understand peas help if the fish are constipated, as they help get everything moving which in turn reduces the internal pressure on the swim bladder from the gut. At least that how I understand it works.

I'm sure someone more experienced than me can set you straight if I have got it wrong.

You could try peas with the fish, nothing ventured nothing gained (other than a lot of fish poo in your pond). Although if the bouyancy issues have only started since he jumped out, that would point to trauma being the cause of the swim bladder problems, rather than constipation. Unless he jumped because of that?

Just by way of an update, jumper had been laying around on the bottom a lot only this time he was in an upright position and when he swam around a bit he didn't sink tail first so I was a bit encouraged he might be improving. I had already prepared an IBC tank with 1000 litres of water and 3 kg of salt and applied a heater to warm it up a bit, plus a massive airstone, so when after a couple of days I saw him laying flat on the surface my hopes were quickly dashed. Put him in to the hospital tank where he seemed quite OK again but 2 days later he was well and truly gone. So first loss in many years, but its always sad when you do your best and it all goes wrong, I won an auction on EBay fr for a pucker microscope with a Bressler camera and loads of goodies with it, came out at 126€, needless to say paid my money and nothing ever arrived, so now awaiting a refund from PayPal. They say things come in 3's so I wasn't surprised that the opportunity for the cold water feed to the kitchen sink to spring a leak was taken, now we await a plumber to run a couple of new feeds in from the main intake. Talk about it never rains.

One of the few downsides living here, French artisans think that all the English are absolutely caked up with money, having sold our overpriced hovels in the UK and buying something affordable at a quarter of the price here, so we have this tattoo on our foreheads "Anglais loads of dosh and as gullible as sin". That's if they turn up in the first instance, normally it's manana, then when they do you are lucky to get a written quote. Thank god we have the UK ex pats to rely on, so many charlatans they are unbelievable, work for Currys selling appliances in the UK and by the time they get to Calais they are qualified in all and sundry, known as P&O qualified.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned on this thread is the fact that Koi don't jump unless there is a problem either with the water or on their skin.

New Koi often jump in the first few days, probably because they think they'll be able to jump back into the water they came from, which they are used to.

What was your pH and KH when you tested the water?

PH was 7.5 from memory, KH don't know as nothing in teat kit to monitor it with, regarding this jumping business, there is no flicking or scraping, just the occasional sound of a fish breaking the water, hardly Sealife performances with killer whales. I did seek clarity on this subject from someone that is a well respected and knowledgeable figure in the Koi world who says that Koi will jump occasionally especially first thing in the morning, providing it is isolated and not a continuous occurrence it is perfectly natural, Unfortunately on this occasion the water level was high and it jumped the wrong way, over the side wall, it won't happen again as there is now another pond the other side of the wall which runs the full 7 metres length
. Plumber did turn up and sorted out lack of water, amazing what you take for granted, when it is all working as it should.
