Heron attack
Despite having a net across our pond one of our koi looks as though it has a heron stab wound today. Any suggestions on 1. treatment 2. Is a heron stab likely, if so how to prevent in future. Herons regularly seen flying over but not seen in garden, just moved to new address with koi transferred here last year.

That’s a real shame mate and after you netted it too
Good water will help the healing process but that will depend on how severe the injury is.
Keep a look out for signs of infection - reddening, fungal, flaking flesh, further scale loss / raising etc.. if this starts then you may need to catch, sedate and treat with antibacterial sprays or possibly antibiotics. For now if it looks clean and is swimming ok I would be tempted to leave it for now...
Cheers

I hate herons !!!
I lifted mine onto my bridge that went over my pond, that raised the net a good 2 foot from the water over most of it, that put them off for good

That’s horrible. How big is the gap between water and net? I thought I’d be safe with net but having second thoughts now.

Hi Freddi, I had a similar injury to one of my small chagois last year. I treated with Kusuris topical treatment kit and the fish is doing well.
Take a look at my thread at the time which shows the heron standing on my taught net, while we’ve thought that we are protecting the fish from the heron. We’ve actually provided the heron a good vantage point! You’ll see that when the heron notices it’s own reflection in hanging cd’s and windows it can be spooked, worth a try there. https://www.koiforum.uk/koi-pond-sec...eron-clip.html

I know it's no consolation but it could be worse. The bloke who lives opposite us, runs a place where they have a number of fishing pools. Obviiyskt they've taken a hit over the last year, as have most of us.
With there being less human traffic at the pools, this has come to the attention of a family of otters.
Not good.

*I love how my autocorrect thinks obviiyskt is a more appropriate word than "obviously". In Iceland perhaps.
