First fish introduced
So yesterday I finally put some fish in my new pond bought from my local dealer in Bournemouth. I bought five fish and all seemed ok to begin with. I was planning to add a few more next week if all went well.
They have been feeding well and seem pretty relaxed apart from one. This afternoon I noticed it flicking on the bottom and sometimes it also seems to be flattening it’s pectoral fins. It only seemed to be doing this around feeding time, the rest of the time it behaves like the others and seems fine.
Should I be worried about this?
I’ve tested the water and results are:
pH 8
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 20
I am only feeding a tiny amount as obviously the bio filter is still new although seeded with Aqua Balance filter gel.
Pond is approx. 1400 gallons with filtreau 20 drum filter, EA varipump 20000 (running at 60% but with about 1.5 meter head up to filter so I think it’s probably running at about 10k per hour), 100 liters K1 in home made moving bed with 45 lpm air pump. Top up from triple cartridge dechlorinator.
Cheers

1: Make sure test kit is fresh, and it never hurts to have a second kit of a different brand.
2: When we set up our pond we had a particular fish a 12 in Asagi that would flash and clamp fins immediately after feeding , only one, fish for a good hour.
I spoke to one of our 2 local koi dealers and he said that it can be the change in food or pellet size. He suggested a pellet soak in pure orange. I was sceptical but did as directed. The fish settled whilst on softer pellets and I reduced the amounts daily over 2 weeks. Going back to dry ones.
Anecdotal ? yes, but it happened.
