    Pls Help Sick Koi!

Hi guys! I am new to this forum with a sick koi currently. I think it is a bacterial infection but not entirely sure. Please let me know what it may be and how to treat it. It is currently in a QT tank with some salt and soon a water heater. This is one of my biggest koi fish so I’ll be pretty sad if this one goes. Thanks guys!
    Best Regards, Martin

It looks bacterial, but it could be secondary from flashing due to parasites. Have you scraped some of the koi in your pond?

I would topically clean and treat the areas with Antibac, and also put another Koi in the QT to keep it company (koi can become stressed in isolation)

If you are free of parasites (check koi in pond as the sat in the QT could have killed any on the fish in question) then check other koi for similar problems and check your whole system for any dead spots and accumulation of detritus that could be harbouring bad bacteria. This includes and filter chambers and media that are not flushing and cleaning properly (I say this from experience!)

Ahhh thank you very much for the reply. I haven’t scraped them yet but I will make sure to do that. Will melafix work? I can do a water change and add some pro form c to the pond. Also Should I keep the water warm to boost their immune system and keep the salt?
    Thanks!

You need to know what to treat before you treat.

What is a good way of eliminating bacteria from the pond? Because currently I do not see any other sick fish.
    Thanks

    Pls Help Sick Koi!

I believe CHLORAMINE-T will support in reducing pathogenic bacterial levels.

    https://aurorakoi.co.uk/product/kusu...ramine-t-250g/

How long has the fish been showing signs of a problem and I assume as you have not mentioned any other pre behaviour issues that there has not been anything?

I would suggest definitely giving the fish a scrap for peace of mind.

Not sure on your pond set up but do you have excess waste in the pond, or dead spots/ liner folds where bacteria Pls Help Sick Koi! could occur.

If it is a bacterial issue you want to identify the cause and rectify

The photos are not great to see the fishes sores

If it is more like ulcer/wound you should treat this with tropical treatment

I’m not an expert so maybe also wait for others to comment also Pls Help Sick Koi!

Thanks for the reply. This has been going on for a week now and my pond is usually very clean. I think the cause may be all that rain water because it’s been raining a lot in my area lately but not entirely sure if that is the cause. I will do a water change and check the other koi’s and probably test the water. The fish will swim around happily and will come to me when I feed it. But the past few days it’s been staying in one spot and it hasn’t even been swimming. That was before I put it in QT and now it seems to be swimming more but very slowly. Do you think I should use hydrogen peroxide to disinfect the wounds? Or should salt be enough.
    thanks!

Good choice Pls Help Sick Koi!

Hope all works out for you and the koi makes a full recovery. There is so much advise online in articles, forums, YouTube.

My advise would be to read as much as you can as opinions vary. I spend a fair amount of time just reading about koi heath in general so I am prepared if an issue occurs. It’s always good to get a second opinion though Pls Help Sick Koi!

Hi! I’ve done some researching and some say baytril injections may be the best. Do you think it’s a good idea to give it a shot?
    Thanks

Have you ever done it before and is the pond heated?

That`s a big step unless you know what your problem is.
It also needs to prescribed by a Vet.

You mentioned rainwater earlier, I don`t think that is the cause, unless its washing in crap from the garden. Soil is full of bacteria.

Don`t be fooled by thinking your pond is clear. I had a MAJOR problem around 8-10 years ago, and I did need Baytril. Had to inject every fish on every 2nd day. Big stress!
I finally found that my Jap Matt chamber was not flushing properly and harbouring a lovely pile of smelly sh**.
Dead spots in pipes, folds in liners, long horizontal runs of pipe, large pipes with low flow, can all harbour settled debris which bad bacteria love!
Check, double check and check again.

As for good anti bacterial pond treatments, as above Chloramine T is good, but I like Virkon S tablets.
Look for them on ebay. A trader called "Bradan" does a deal on 2 packs.
500mg tablets dosed at 1 to 500 gallons lowers bacteria levels and is active against various viruses (not sure about CV19! lol)

I was advised by Richdon Koi to double dose to start with and then weekly at normal dose.
It does not kill your filters and aids the fishes recovery.

But please please please, do not throw stuff at them without investigation.
Keep up with the QT treatment. Heating is very good, topically treat the areas with Kusuri AntiBac or similar and get a friend in with it.

A dose of Virkon in the pond won`t hurt and check all your other fish.
And if you haven`t already, scrape and check for parasites as they could be the cause.

But don`t neglect checking your full pond and system.

    Hi
    just reading this thread.
if you are saying you have had a lot of rain water, have you checked the KH and PH.
if this was low it would stress the koi some more than others, which could then lead to a parasites and bacterial issues

Thank you for the reply! I will check my system today and see what I can find. I managed to get some baytril from a koi seller from my area. I recently switched my filter system so there may be a problem. I can’t get my hands on chloramine t but I will check out the Virkon tablets. The wound has gotten better lately so do you think I should continue the same treatment or inject them with baytril. Is there any danger to this?
    Thanks
