    Sick Koi advise required

    Hi,

This is my first post, so please bear with me whilst I try to make sure I have included all the correct information.

One of my koi has developed red rashes on its fins and around its mouth. It comes to the surface gasping for air and seems to have difficulty staying down. I isolated it several weeks ago for a couple of weeks and treated it with Chloramine T.

More recently the koi has started sitting on the surface amounts the lilies with its dorsal fin sticking out of the water?

I have 6 Koi in total:

They have been with me for around 5 years, with the pond up and running for just over 5 years.
    Pond

My pond is rectangular 5m x 3.5m with a constant depth of around 1.3m
    4400 gallons

The filter is a Nexus 220 with a Nexus Evo 55

    CHEMISTRY:
    Pond

    pH 8.5
    KH 7
    GH 9
    Ammonia 0.0Nitrite 0.0
    Nitrate 0.0 mg/l
    Phosphate 0.0mg/l

    Tap water

    pH 7.5
    KH 13
    GH 18
    Ammonia 0.0Nitrite 0.0
    Nirate 0.0mg/l
    Phosphate 0.0mg/l

I use Pure pond bomb on a monthly basis.

I have recently started using NT Chlor-go when adding fresh tap water, as I have been cleaning the nexus almost every two/three days.

    Hi Akoi
Your water tests look ok, how much water do you change each week.
also are you pump or gravity feed to the filter.
Have you got a microscope and scraped the koi, several of them.
it looks bacterial, but this is often secondary so if the water test is good next would be looking at parasites.
The other thing, are you adding any aeration to the pond.
This could be air stones or perhaps waterfall etc, in warm weather the oxygen levels could drop and stress them.

    Hi Sim,

I have a waterfall and added a large air stone about 2 months ago.

I only change the water when I clean out the nexus, which is probably around 3 - 4 times week at the moment this would mean that I introduce around 400 litres of fresh water a week, probably not enough as the pond holds roughly 20,000 litres?

Further to my earlier e-mail I have now taken two different scrapping and have found no sign of any parasites, see attached photos.

I have also done a 25% water change.

I have checked the Koi's gills which to me look perfectly healthy and yet he is swimming and acting as if he has parasites from everything I read?

Any thoughts from anyone much appreciated or advise great received
