Diy foam fractionator
Considering making one of these they look prity straight forward to make but believe you have to play around with the depth of pipe and distance between air stone?? Does anyone have any good tips to look out for or to do when making one? And Iv read that they work best in pond rather than in moving bed etc. Any advice would be appreciated

Charco123,
Erm yeah. In my head a fractionator creates enough turbulence to cause dissolved carbons (and undissolved carbons) to stick together on the outside of air bubbles so much that the bubbles don't burst but instead create a froth which you can collect. A pond is always going to be "dirtier" than the water in a moving bed (assuming the water has been filtered) so you will get much more froth. Been impressed at the amount of froth collected when seeing some on YouTube but what doesn't impress me is the quality of the pond filter if the pond is that dirty!

Been doing abit of research on this tonight actually apparently they work really well along side other filtration. And was reading basically how you explained it ! I think I’m going to give one a go see how it works out I may post a few pics on here. I’m going to try koi chronicals example on his YouTube but I have heard that manky sanke has a easy diy one so will try research that one too. Thanks for the response kenny

May want to move this to the DIY sub-forum
Wrighty made one too that seemed effective - make it easy for the foam to escape using larger diameter pipe.
I'm hoping the new pond design that the two 4" airlifts will act, at least partially, a fractionator. The T pieces used to let the bubbles escape allow for the collection of foam and an overhead T with a slight slope then allows the foam to slide down into a small drain. Will probably use 40mm pipe for the waste chute.14000l, my mutts: Chargoi (2010), Doitsu (2022), Tancho (2022), Kujaku (2022), Hi Utusri (2022)
