Urgent Please Help with diagnosing my problem
Hi Everyone,
Im really hoping you can help.
My set up - 1200 Gallons including filter - Bottom Drain to Nitratec Multi Bay with Brushes and Jap Mat. Been set up for 5 years with no major problems, stock originally was 8 Koi between 8-12".
API water test, shows no Nitrites or Ammonia, just phosphates slightly high at 1.0ppm. - PH is 7.5
Last weekend, I went to what I believe is a reputable koi dealer and bought 4 koi, of around 4".
For the last 3 days, several of my fish have intermittently had clamped fins and sat at the bottom, I have scrapped 6 fish in total of the past 2 days and not been able to find any type of parasites, I have changed nothing else except added these new fish last weekend.
This morning, 90% of the fish have stopped feeding, only a Chagoi picking small amounts. The rest are sat on the bottom, There are no visible marks on the fish, but I can see things are going down hill fast.
I have done 3 x 25% water changes over the past 3 days.
Can you please help, I don't know what I am missing, the scrapes I have done have been difficult to get mucus and I do struggle with my eyes to get a decent view at x400
Im not sure what else I can do, but i know if I don't do something I am going to loose my koi.
Thank you in advance - Mark

Hi Mark.
Sorry to hear this. If you check out my thread (just below your one at the moment), the same has happened to me. Hopefully you can get on top of it and with more success than I've had.
With mine, it was a fairly rapid deterioration, from clamped fins and flashing, to the fish turning over and drifting around belly up, before periodically righting themselves and swimming down to the bottom. So far I've had two die but currently have another four that look very poorly. The five new additions all seem very healthy, with the exception of a little Ogon, which is currently just drifting about with clamped fins.
The diagnosis for mine after a scrape by the dealer was White Spot and flukes
Really wish you well with it.

Hi G Mac,
Thanks for the reply and I'm really sorry to hear that you are having simular problems as me.
I am going to try a few more scrapes today, I am pretty sure it can only be a parasite problem as i have not added new fish for a number of years.
I will have a read of your thread and see if i can gain a bit more advice, i hope you are able to sort you problem out successfuly
Many Thanks
Mark

This may sound silly but are you only using x400 magnification?
Also, are you putting a drop of pond water on the mucus? This will help you see anything, especially if you aren't getting much mucus.
If you are only using x400, you might think this is counter intuitive but try using x40 - x60 and going over the whole slide. Don't spend too long on that bit because the important part is next....
Then go over it again at x100-x150
If at all possible, try to video your search. Either by mini grab or even by using a mobile phone camera. Then replay it after.
Honestly, I have missed whopping great nematodes in the past and only spotted them on the replay.
You could even upload the video to YouTube or similar so everyone else can see if you have missed anything.
Keep us updated.

Thanks Andre
To be honest the lowest I have tried is x100 so I will give your suggestions a try.
Many thanks

I'm in Gloucester, I've been trickling water in and out since yesterday, cleaned the filters, not feeding, the fish are looking a bit brighter today

If its there you will most likely see it at x100 though mate.
Do put the drop of pond water on though because then you will get what I call channels around the edges of the cover slip.
That's where you can often find costia if it's there.
If you see lots of movement in the channels, just hold your breath for a few seconds to see if it stops.
I have chased "parasites" round the channels a few times before realising my breath was responsible for the commotion in the channels.
One last thing. This is a good practice for anyone to do....
You say you have cleaned your filter? Take a scrape of the filter wall or the pond wall if you've cleaned the filter.
Now look at that under the microscope.
If you see nothing on the slide, this means your technique needs some improvement.
If you see "things", now you know you are doing it properly.

I havent found anything Gaz, but i believe that may be because of my eyes (i'm getting old) - I think i am going to have to invest in a scope that is helpful for weaker eye sight

Hi All,
Bit of an update.
When i purchased these new Koi, I also purchased x2 for the father in law at the same time.
He called me this morning, all of his fish were sat on the bottom and not feeding, same symtoms as mine.
I went round his house, with my microscope and scraped 3 koi.
I managed to find from the 3 slides x1 Gill Fluke and x1 Trichodina.(Would you expect to fine Trichodina in low number on healthy Koi?)
I completed a FMG treatment whilst I was there.
With this in mind, I am considering treating my pond with either PP or FMG, I know that its not advisable without having detected the problem, but I am thinking it may be worth it under the circumstances.
Thanks
Mark

Flukes are relatively easy to see mate so may not be as challenging for you? I would not use PP and FMG if you think it’s flukes you are treating.
Try and get someone to pop round and help - your local Koi Association or decent local dealer may help before you guess, which can lead to other issues.
If I was nearer I would help you.
Cheers
