    Rolling and itching

Hi guys I have 2-3 koi that appear to be rolling and itching on the bottom drains and sides of my pond . One did it 5-6 times before swimming off. Sadly I don’t yet have a microscope so can’t do a scrape. I do test the water tho Daily and noticed in the last couple of days a slight rise in chlorine so have Added some dechloriting fluid and swopped out my in line dechlorinator.
Should I add some acroflavine or FMG as a precaution or wait while I shop around for a microscope ?!

Slow down Stevo, how have you noticed a rise in chlorine?
What is your in line dechlorinater is it a cartridge job?
    If so what sort?

Really need to sort that out then your water, most on here use sodium thiosulphate cheap on Ebay will find Mankys link if needed he is the water genius.

The water purifiers arnt very reliable and I dont use mine just the s/t which is great

Hi John Thx for replying and for the link - didn’t even know about that stuff but would be handy to have for when my in line dechlorinator runs low.
I have Always used Evo Aqua in-line Carbon dechlorinator (30 inch one) which I Now have plumbed in to my drums’ auto fill as I don’t like the idea of tap water entering the system without some kind of protection against chlorine. I’ve replaced that anyway as I knew it was about due so had one in my man-shed ready to go in - guess I should’ve done that sooner !
This morning’s water test showed a slightly higher reading than normal for chlorine so I shot out and got some NT Labs chlorine remover from a nearby pond shop. The only reason I thought about acriflavine is that I know it can treat parasites and quite a few other things but my pond is 29000 gallons so it’ll take a fair bit to treat.

    Rolling and itching

Blimey, you’d have to be putting a fair amount of tap water in that to cause problems.
If you use tap water for your drum cleaning cycle then 99.99999999% of it will go down the waste chute surely, it does on mine/every other drum I’ve seen.
This also keeps the drum screen clean.
Trickle in/out if required to keep the flow slow through the dechlorinator.
There is of course merit in the way you’re doing it as you’re not wasting the water from the drum cleaning process so there’s pros and cons for both methods.

    Hi

the behaviour is highly likely to be due to water parameters, parasites or both.

I agree with John1 - don’t guess mate as this can lead to unnecessary and additional stress.

if you use some dechlorinate that should help if that is the sole issue.

Get yourself a scope mate and learn how to use it as it will pay you dividends

Happy to help when the problems are known or if scope coaching is required

    cheers

The drum uses pond water to wash itself so the tap water is an auto top up to replace that . Additional water is needed as I have a small leak that I’m still trying to find - my skimmer Was leaking a little but sorted that and my waterfall. so it’s got to be somewhere Else around the perimeter as it stops leaking once the level falls below the shoulder that my rocks are sat on - so far it’s thwarted me trying to find it as a big chunk of my pond is under my decking but I’m not going to give up.

Hi steve . Put all your readings up. Ammonia. Nitrite. Ph. Chlorine use dpd4
Tablets. Nitrates. Kh . Also test kh from the tap sauce.
And as said get a scope. You don t want to be treating blind mate. You could be treating wrong thing.
And if you have something else your treating for.
Could cause a lot of problems.
Good advice from all of the above.

Hi there. Just bear in mind that if you start using ST, this may compromise using Potassium Permanganate as part of any needed treatment. I used to use it for the reasons noted but there are good water purifier units. As mentioned there are ones that aren’t so effective too.

Checks and balances are key here before jumping in and making any changes.

    Microscope is fundamental.

    All the best with koi.

Have noticed this a bit recently in our pond, nothing constant but every now and then a certain koi will have a bit of a flashing moment for 1min or so then go back to mooching around the pond, I've seen it with different fish at different times.

I've just ordered an Apex Practitioner from there own site for £115 with free delivery, I had a search on here and they seem to get good reviews so maybe look into that, hope you get it sorted.

I would recommend you look at camera for the microscope.

I have found it much easier to look at a screen when doing any scrapes than I did when just using the eye piece.
