Koi Scale damage/sores?
Hi All,
Getting on top of my inherited pond and now that i have got the water clarity sorted out, have noticed a couple issues with the wee guys
First off I seen some of them had fluffy cotton like growths on maybe 2 or 3 of them, and the pond is currently undergoing a treatment of FMG.
The other thing i have noticed is some scale damage pictured below, any ideas what could be causing this? is it a parasite or fungal infection or just rubbed itself on something?
and another less severe one:
I got myself an NTLabs 200 pond test kit, and everything came back fine, apart from the GH (test kit says it should require >8 drops to turn blue, mine took maybe 5?) but i am not 100% sure what to do with that information. the KH might have been a bit low also (among the kit left by the previous owner, i found a large net filled with shells, ive read that this is a solution for raising the KH?)
any help would be appreciated!

Post all your parameters on here as it makes it easier for people to understand whats going on
Have you seen the koi flashing recently, it could be an old injury from whatever you are treating for?
What is the FMG treating?4600 Gallon Concrete Block and Fiberglass
2100 mm x 710 mm Infinity Window 32mm thick glass
2 x Aerated Bottom Drains and Skimmer
Filtreau HiFlow 30 Drum Filter
Bio Chamber - 140 litres K1
Bakki Shower - 30 KG Sakura Far Infrared Media
2 x 18,000 lh pumps
Heated from house boiler through a heat exchanger
Idealseal MS290

So the test kit doesnt give exact figures, but Ammo,Na2,Na3 were all 0, PH was green, but the KH was abit low (paler yellow than the card), and the GH only took 5 drops to go blue instead of 8
I have not seen any flashing or flicking from any of the fish, either when watching them or feeding.
The FMG was to treat a white cottony growth on a couple of the fish fins/nostrils, i seen it recommended on here as a sort of "catch all" for those symptoms if you cant do a scrape, and when i ran the diagnosis tool on the NTlabs website it also recommended FMG. i put that in on Wednesday and the couple of fish that were affected looked to have cleaned right up already.
Pond wise:
~2400Gal
Nexus 200 series filter with K1 media, pump fed off a 100l/h submersable pump
twin 55w UV filter fed from a seperate 100l/h pump at the other end of the pond
2x EvoAqua 70 air pumps one on the nexus one with a air disk on the pond bottom
there is a heater inline of the nexus intake, but i dont know if its working.
I am in the Fife area, Scotland.

Hi Craig,
How Many drops does it take for the KH to turn yellow?
Cheers

so i done the 7 drops on the test, and it wasnt quite yellow. but i clearly misunderstood the test and didnt continue adding drops until it went proper yellow.
FMG treatment is finished tomorrow, so i will do a water change and do another test on the KH an GH

Ok so after water change, I have redone the KH an GH tests with the following results:
KH: 3 drops to turn yellow
GH: 3 drops to turn blue
So it looks like both of these are way low... thoughts?

Cheers guys,
So i guess i need to ask how much Bicarb do i need to be adding? and i presume i want to be raising it gradually so as to not shock the fish? will that bag of shells do anything? I'm abit wary of putting that in incase the fish injure themselves on it?
I'm in Fife, so we have pretty soft water to begin with, so i take it I'm going to have to add bicarb any time i do a water change?
Will the water hardness help the fish heal, or can i do anything to help?
Does the picture just look like scale damage or could it be something more?

Hello mate. The things growing out of the koi's nostrils? Did they look like this.....
067A125nares.jpg
If so, they are normal mate and don't need to be treated. They're called nares.
Could you re-test the water and post pictures of the results. Only I dunno if you have done them correctly. It's easy to get confused so don't worry. We have all done it. The reason I mention it is because if you have a 0 ammonia reading and a 0 nitrIte reading then it's almost impossible to have a 0 nitrAte reading.

it was a furry growth that was growing on that Nare, after the FMG treatment it vanished, along with the nare (so he now only has 1 of them )
here is a picture of the water test I've just done, so it seems now i have both Ite and Ate... this just after about 10% water change yesterday afternoon.

Those readings don’t look too bad although the PH could be a little high and if the KH drops further this could swing and cause a crash. Did you source some Bicarbonate mate?

So retested the water today and the nitrite has stayed clear, no pink hue this time, the nitrate is still very slightly pink, probably less than 0.5 looking at the scale provided.
Bicarb should be here tomorrow, how much should I be adding? I presume not all at once either?

perfect thanks alot for the link!
As a sanity check:
Current value from the test, is 3 drops to go yellow (7 drops = 125mg/l so 3 drops is 53mg/l)
the pond is about 10,000L
so 125-53 * 10000 = 720,000mg or 720g to bring it up to the desired level
But I should only be increasing by 20mg/l per day, or 200,000mg(200g) per day
Then Sodium Bicarb doesn't have 100% carbonte, so i need to multiply that 720g to factor in the other elements present
So 720g * 1.5 = 1080g total of Sodium Bicarb
and a rate of 200 * 1.5 = 300g per day
Bicarb just turned up, so if that math is right, i can put the first dose in now?

So i finished adding the bicarb last week, 1080g in total.
retested the water today with the following:
KH took 4 drops to turn yellow, GH 2 drops. PH is now around 8.0
Another new thing, two of the fish have developed a swollen cheek, only one side, the same side on both. neither fish seems to care, both are super active especially when feeding.
I guess I need to add more Bicarb to raid the KH more, but I am worried about the PH value going too high if i do so? and this swollen cheek thing is new since adding bicarb
feel like I am running in circles
Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
