Possible swim bladder problem
Good Afternoon, I'm a new pond owner. Only 12 months. I have a total of 10 fish mainly small koi. But have also purchased 2 mirror carp, of which one has a problem. It stays at the bottom and when it does attempt to swim. Sinks rapidly. I have transferred it into a tank to keep an eye on it. And increase the water temp. It generally looks healthy. Yet does not come up for food.
Any ideas or treatments to help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Mike

Hi,
Have you checked water parameters and undertaken a mucus scrape to rule out parasites?

Hi Gaz, thanks for the reply. Water is spot on. Not up to speed with the mucus scrape. Only just getting started. Water is crystal clear. Using oase 36000 set up
All the other fish are fine, barring a few carp pox. The mirror is approximately 8 inches long. Poor things swimming like it's got a belly full of lead?
Only have floating food too. So need to come up with a plan for temporary bottom food. Have read skinned cooked peas can work?

Crystal clear water doesn’t mean it’s spot on... have you done any tests mate?

Sorry. I did say it was spot on. Nitrate, ammonia and ph. All perfect. Using nt labs?

I have checked all water parameters and are completely fine. Which has lead me to believe the problem is swim bladder.?

Water quality has caused me massive issues in the past And they were never miles out on the readings as I thought they were close enough after doing tests, tbh they were that close I thought it was spot on too...
Do you have any readings or images mate?
They may help the experts help you, I’m not an expert but learnt from them where I was going wrong

I totally appreciate and understand what you're saying. I'm brand new and need all the help i can get. So thanks.
My test kit is nt labs and tests...
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Ph 7.4-7.5
Any suggestions for food too bottom feed until I can get out?
Like I said earlier. I have a 4ft tank I have put him in to keep an eye. And with the temperature a little higher hopefully this may help too?
We shall see.....
Thanks

Hi mate,
Assuming the KH was ok, I would:
- Heat the QT tank go 18 (or higher if possible)
- salt the QT tank to .3%
- Add Aquasource Vitalize at 400ml per 1000 litres
- feed some shelled peas
Keep us posted mate.
Not sure if any one else has any alternative suggestions?
Cheers
Gaz

Afternoon Gaz,
With regards to adding the salt to. 3 as you recommended. How can I calculate the correct amount to add. The tank is 240litres or 63 gallon.
I have ordered the vitalise, I have no heater at the moment but ambient temp is only 15 degree's so I'll have to invest in one.
And have dropped in a few shelled peas.

Hi mate,
Was it you that ordered from me earlier on my website?
Regarding heater it’s likely a decent ‘drop in’ aquarium heater will do the job.
Regarding salt, the initial dose is easier to calculate than after any water changes unless you invest in a salinity meter - only around £20 on fleabay
I will try and upload a salt chart to this thread... if I fail dismally I am sure someone will pop one on shortly (and laugh at my IT failing)
Cheers

Hi mate, a bit of heat and salt as Gaz said will help, salt 1/2oz per gal to start is ok dont worry too much about food as he will be ok but one or two peas is fine.
If you can put a buddy in with him as koi dont like being on their own, presume you have isolated him.John

Thanks for all your help guys.
So update.... bought a heater. Set at 20 degrees Celsius.
Added the salt as advised. Added the aqua source vitalise and is moving round now. But from this morning it's having the opposite problem. As in can't stay down. Tails up and is struggling. I'm open to any ideas?

Hi mate,
Great effort - glad it’s got moving again.
What is the salt % you have dosed to?
Tail up and head down can be a sign of parasite (often Flukes). Are you able to take a mucus scrape?
Cheers

Hi Gaz, I added to bring it in line with. 3% like you said. I used the salt chart and double checked with an online calculator to confirm. I haven't got a micro scope to check for parasites. I'll have to invest in one. Anything I can do in the mean time? I have put an air stone in also. Would that have caused problems?
Thanks
