Bulging eye and slightly raised scales
Hello all, I noticed my Matsuba has a bulging eye on one side so after netting him I checked him over and noticed he has slightly raised scales near his pec on one side only but no sores or anything else.
water checks were all fine, only thing was ammonia was between 0 and 0.2 if being picky, otherwise all 0 and normal. I am mid routine 10% water change at the moment and all other fish fine and happy. I only noticed as the matsuba was sitting a bit higher in the water than normal and slowly cruising round the edge of the pond.
Don't have access to a microscope and obvious despite the current climate its not likely I will get one now. Any ideas of what treatment would be needed without scrapes or will I need to scrape for certain?

Just to add, went outside and the fish was laying on its side on the bottom breathing so slowly I thought it had completely stopped. now have him in my measuring bowl separate as don't really know what to do with it and its breathing exceptionally slowly. Wouldn't be an oxygen issue etc as have a pirated bottom drain running 50lph 24/7 and all the other fish are cruising around happy as anything with no signs of any issue in condition etc, all feeding when I have fed them. He seemed fine every day I have checked and shape wise isn't skinny although I can't remember the last time I have seen him feed to be fair as usually the bigger fish are the ones stealing all the food straight away

Hi mike, added 2 yesterday, temp around 8 degrees now, was 7.3 this morning. new fish fine and happy as are all the others just this one which I think I have lost unfortunately judging by the lack of breathing. exceptionally slow but still alive. As its only 20cm it could have been sick for a little while and gone unnoticed to be fair with the new fish being the final nail in the coffin.

Hi mate, that maybe the case but I had a similar thing happen to me back in November when I added 2 Japanese tosai in at 8c
Made my existing koi sick. Similar behaviour to what you have mentioned.
Never found anything physically wrong but I lost I think 10 fish
Since this I have read a lot and been given some great advise. I would not add new koi to my pond sub 12c and I also would never add new fish directly to my pond regardless of temperature.
I’m not sure what more advise I can give, just hope the others remain ok.
If you can I would recommend getting a quarantine set up for future new additions.
Heat and salt normally help with the stresses of new additions.
Gazkoi has been great in educating me.. I still have a lot to learn, mistakes happen - it helps you learn.

I wont make the same mistake again. Very strange really they was from the same dealer and went in about 5pm yesterday, I noticed the fish from this morning so probably 16 hours later. All the fish have gone in since January as its a new pond. The poor little bugger didnt make it but I wont be making any additions till the temperature has stabilised and improved to 15 or so. I do need to sort a quarantine set up as well, so much to get with koi!

I agree mate.. it’s a massive learning curve. Keep us updated on the situation.
Hope things stabilise for you.

Hi
My local Koi Center advises you not to take the take fish away until your pond temp is higher than their tanks - I've bought fish at this time of the year in the past and picked them up in May - you could always go visit them before we had this virus out break - always worth a check to see if the dealer will let you do this

Agree Kev.. most dealers would keep the koi for new owner until Easter time from what I had seen.
I was impatient and wanted my koi.. was uneducated and excited for my new fish.. wish the dealer did advise me of the risks but it was my choice and it was an expensive and upsetting lesson to learn!

Thanks for the advice, will know for next time. It is a strange situation as the one that died was one of 2 added at the same time and the second addition to the pond, whereas currently all the other fish are completely fine and actively looking for food etc. Very strange indeed.

Just to add to the good advice from above.
It can take up to 2 years for pond to mature. Mine did.
So just be careful how many fish you add.
While the pond is maturing sam.
One added fish can unbalanced the pond mate.
This time of year feed sparingly and mature the filters slowly. Unless heated.
Sorry to hear of the poorly fish mate.
That's the reason I had qt grow on built
Salt and heat might help.
If salting 0.3 on the volume. Of water in tank. Then after say 5 or 6 days. Up it to 0.6.
But always remember salt can take a long time to dilute out of the water lol

Thanks Freddy, I won't be adding any more for a while now. of the fish I have currently theres only 3 that aren't between 12cm and 24cm so pretty much all babies. I will probably clay the pond on sunday as I am back to work Monday so I wont be home to look in the pond when its all clouded up! All parameters are fine and done a water change yesterday so just want it to all settle with no food etc till the water warms a bit now after the loss.

Sorry to hear about this fish.
I had the exact same problem with one of mine last year. Remarkably it pulled through although at the very same time another fish got a bent spine. The only thing that was unusual for me was a huge thunderstorm that day.
Both are doing well although the bent one doesn’t move so well!1000 gallons, approximately 3ft deep

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
