You would have got new pond syndrome
Know matter what Mike. It took my pond nearly 2 years to fully mature. It is just easier to control with less fish.. as well has the filters. Pond pipework the lot has to mature.
Just keep doing the water changes. When higher readings the bigger the water change.

Help, koi death
Capacity is 1700 gallons. I run a variable pump it’s capable of 10k litres ph I have it about 50% capacity currently so c.5k ph turn turnover about 1.25 times per hour. From a rated perspective it’s capable but it’s stocked high with 20 fish, Albert it all fairly small 4-6” with the exception of 3 larger 14”. Aware that they will out grow but planning on this pond being a grow on in future

I'll probably get shot down in flames but I think your easypod is on the limit for your pond. I would think about maybe changing to the Nexus 200 /210 / 220 or maybe putting the return of the easypod in a small multi bay filter. You can never over filter a pond.

I had something very similar to this in summer and it was down to over feeding or/and my filter not being up to the job. slowed the feeding down and increased water changes took around a month for me to feel happy to feed daily again but done with measured amounts each day. I recently purchased that test kit your using too and must say i much prefer it over nt labs. May be worth considering a shower along side that easy pod!

I think you should concentrate on getting the ammonia bound and add some salt to protect the fish from the nitrites. I know my fish get stressed out with the smallest amount of ammonia and this would also make the fish spit as it burns the gills..

Yes my immediate concern is to get the water balanced. It could have been this bad for weeks as I had been showing clear readings for months so had just been doing weekly 10% changes.
Do you guys think this could be the reason for all the flashing and deaths?
Any recommendations on a shower?

Not sure if you previously posted, but what is your PH?
With my PH I'm sure my Koi would be close to death at that level of ammonia (Ammonia Toxicity, temperature and PH are linked).
At 0.25 ammonia I get visible symptoms, at 0.5 they are in trouble. Never had it higher than that before.
At least we've found something definite that needs fixing, may or may not be the cause of death but quite possible if you've a high PH.
Getting the water right always comes first, over and above anything else.
Agree with Andy's post about the Easypod not being up to it with 20 Koi. When my pond was 1700 gallons with 8 Koi it took the pond 9 Months to fix nitrite problems and I was running a Nexus 220. Even with 8 Koi I don't think an Easypod would have been up to it in the summer Months, but you'll probably get away with it through Winter.

Most people use them for machanical cleaning. They do work as a bio as well.
But it takes a long time to mature. In an easypod.
I had 2x easy pod on my old pond for 8 years. And they did the business. But as I upped the fish load. Sizes feeds. I realised I needed better. Filters And a larger pond. I
Think more then likely ammonia and nitrite has done that fish in.
But I would keep on scraping. As the ammonia and nitrite will be stressing the fish. And this will make them weaker for parasites.
Just my opinion. Are they still flashing.

Help, koi death
My ph has always been stable at 7.5 I did look on mankys site and he has a good graph and info on ammonia see below link
Ammonia
That would suggest it could be as high as 3mg I know the graph says max but there is no real explanation as to what to expect at that level and also what 50% exposure would do.. ?
I am aware the pod is extremely stretched as is but I figured as the fish mass is small it would suffice for the short term
I have a pond bomb coming today I’m hoping that will help with clearing the nitrite and ammonia
Ammonia still present and still observing flashing, water changes still in progress
Can only fill at 2lrs pm on my carbon filter.

08-12-2019, 05:46 AM #56I did a DIY shower myself and it works to perfection, lots of good bio.. Mine is 6 tubs and about 400 lbs of feather rock.. There's a lot of info on the net for DIY showers..
Until you up your bio and get rid of the ammonia and nitrites your fish will continue to flash and get worse..

Dilution is the solution to pollution.
Change water. 25% every couple of days maybe?
Use Sodium Thiosulphate crystals diluted in warm water and top up from the garden hose temporarily.
Long term your bio needs upping somewhat.

Mikeh83,
Just a thought. I have anoxic filtration in my pond with and without plants in the baskets. Plants are not much use at this time of the year but the anoxic part will still be working away. Your filters at this time of the year are going to take an age to mature. Doing something like creating a few anoxic baskets and simply hanging them over the side of the pond in say a string bag may go some way in reducing your readings. They don't take a long time to mature.
In my head (and not tested scientifically) you could achieve the same anoxic effect by simply half filling a string bag with cleaned (danish pink) cat litter available from Pets At Home and pushing a few balls of laterite (or other iron rich substrate) contained in the foot of a pair of tights into the middle of the mass of cat litter. Just make sure the cat litter does not fall out of the bag/basket and into the pond. It plays havoc with your bottom drain (learned from experience).

Help, koi death
Hi Kenny
Thanks for info. I am new to koi keeping and have not even heard of of anoxic filters but this sounds interesting and I am looking for a quick boost of bio help.
Is the any resources you can share for getting up to speed?
