Several koi flashing after pond clean
Hello all,
On sunday i did the usual filter flush / clean and water change (using 3 stage water filter to refill).
On this occasion I also cleaned the sides of the pond with a brush which made the water dirty with sedinent and dirt.
Late sunday and monday there were fish flashing.
Monday I scraped 5 fish but found nothing. Checked the water and all fine.
This evening the water is looking clean and the fish have stopped flashing.
The question is, could the sediment / dirt generated from cleaning the sides irritated the fish causing the flashing?
If they have now stopped should I stop worrying? (All seem happy tonight and feeding fine)
Thanks in advance,
Andy

Answer to your question is, yes, definitely (imagine the ‘grunge’ in their delicate gills!). Don’t stop worrying just yet - keep an eye on your fish and your water parameters for 2 - 3 weeks, if all is fine then you and they should be fine. Hopefully it’s just a blip.

How old are your filters, are you sure chlorine isn't getting through the filters. Take a sample and test for chlorine

Hello,
The filters are due a change. Do you know if chlorine is an irritant to the fish? I know it is not good for filter bacteria.
Thanks,
Andy

Another important point with purifiers, is that virtually none of them will remove chlorine at full water pressure rate.
Most of them including big blues are only capable of removing chlorine properly at a trickle rate only, and even then only with a fairly new set of cartridges/carbon.

i had a problem with a brand new Vyair 20" 3 stage dechlorinator.
i'm still not using it now, i gave up in the end.
even at a trickle (less than 1LPM) dpd 4 tabs were showing slightly pink.
and any time i started adding water through the pods the fish started flashing.
So i went back to an old 100gpd RO unit i have, i just leave it running 24/7 trickle in/out.
i got a set of 3 high capacity 10" prefilters for it that are good for over 25,000 gallons throughput for £30 from RO-man.
going to add another 100gpd membrane and use it 6 hours on/off. doubling the life of the prefilters
water quality has been great for a pond only 6 weeks old.
no detectable ammonia or nitrite, now less than 5ppm nitrate and falling.
ph 7.8, KH 3, GH4.
and fish are loving the soft water.

Yes mate. Chlorine is worse than ammonia for fish. In that chlorine harms fish itself.... but it also wipes out bacteria in the filter, which leads to an ammonia spike which harms fish....followed by a nitrite spike....which harms fish.
I was going to ask how fast you flow through your pods but planetfishkoi covered it. They aren't exaggerating either.

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
