Thread: Bloated Koi

    Bloated Koi

I have 10 Koi in the 40cm to 50cm range. All seem happy and all but one well proportioned. However, one of them became bloated towards the end of last summer. I assumed it was laden with eggs and it would return back to normal. But all over winter up to now it has remained bloated. I have observed it when feeding and it doesn’t get any more than its fair share. Any thoughts. The attached pic should help which shows it next to others. . Thanks.

Just looked at the first photo of the fish on its own. It is facing upwards so it is exaggerating the condition. The other photo gives a better perspective, but it is very bloated.

Are the scales flat or sticking out?

Hi Alburglar, the scales aren’t sticking out, they are flat so don’t think it’s dropsy.

Hi Colin, not an expert but it does look severe and as you say doesnt look like dropsy.

Could be eggs or more likely internal problems which I am afraid not much you can do about that.
Does she seem ok with it and not sulking?

Hi John, She seems fine with it. Not sulking at all and is eating well. I don’t think it is eating too much as I didn’t feed them at all over winter and was hoping that it would return to normal, but stayed bloated the whole time. How long can they retain eggs for? There has been no signs of spawning yet this year.
