Don't know about anyone else but in the pic it looks like someone spilt tamodine all over it.
It would be very difficult to guess without a fair bit more information. If I had to guess I'd say some kind of bacterial infection.
Do you know where he bought them? If you prefer not to name, was it from someone who's got a popular You Tube channel?

I had lesser degree bacterial problem when starting out the hobby and fish developed ulcers that kept growing bigger and bigger until dropsy set in… One triple dose of Virkon Aquatic sorted it all out - one 20cm koi with an ulcer larger than 50p coin healed magically. Water temp was 15d. Tried repeat topical treatment, PP, tricide neo etc - none worked like Virkon. I’ve since bought a 10KG tub and dose biweekly. Been two years not a single ulcer. My water is kept clean though not a log of organic load

KHV would present as sunken eyes, also possibly from what I've heard a notch in the nose.
If it is bacterial I would suspect it has gone beyond anything chemicals can do considering the number of deaths. Would need swabs analysed and antibiotics prescribed for injection.
Obviously scrapes first as bacterial is a big conclusion to jump to from that one pic.
The dealer you mentioned isn't one I was thinking of.
Seems the fish have been moved about a lot, so lots of stress would certainly make them susceptible to pretty much any nasties that may be present.

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
