    Flukes

Hi all, I noticed a small bit of flashing recently. I did a scrape on the koi I saw flashing and found a fluke. Only one and not moving. Its the first time I've done a scrape so I'm wondering if flukes can be observed moving, and should I worry about 1 found.

I have a bit of salt in the pond and I'm at 14c at the moment unheated.

Also not sure if this is Skin or Gill fluke.

    Thanks in advance.

It's a body fluke.you can see the live young inside.

They are supposedly easier to shift than Gill flukes.
All flukes are difficult to shift below 18c.

I would treat with fluke solve or Lernex.

Likely you won't get them all but they will be dormant through the winter. They will be back in the spring with vengeance so expect to have to tackle them in the warmer water.

If you can heat it would aid treatment, 18c+ is best 16c.will help. The higher temperature raises the flukes metabolism making them more vulnerable to treatments.

Bob, thanks for the reply. Thats some good info. I will treat now while temps are up a bit and see how things go.

Should i bypass my drum for fluke treatment? I understand I need to turn my uv off.

    Yes UV off.
UV and sun light will break down treatments.
Personally I treat after dark. I actually switch my drum off for 12 hrs. Keep the air on. No feed previous day or day if treatment. I try to get the maximum impact. I then repeat every 7 days 3 treatment in total. Lernex Pro is my preferred option.

Flukes are hard to shift and treatments are expensive!

Got flukes aswell. Applied lernex pro 3 days ago. Will apply second dose after 3more days. UV off. But i suspect one of my little ones got bacteria infection. Can i apply virkon now? Or should i wait more because of lernex?
Sorry for writing here, i dont wanna spam a lot of threads with flukes...

Hope you don't mind me jumping on this thread. I also have an issue with body Flukes.

Having done a scrape 6 days ago and found body Fluke I treated my pond with NT Labs Flukasol, as per the bottle, including switching off the UV etc.

Since treatment, more koi have started to flash and sit at the bottom of the pond. Is this normal? The koi seem to be getting worst than better. Does it mean the treatment is working, or should I try a different medication altogether?

Thank you for your help in advance.

I can only speak from limited personal experiences - I have observed two interesting things within 24-48 hrs immediately after fluke treatment - that is, koi that were previously really suffering (spit out food completely and some can’t even can’t open mouth fully) show immediate symptoms relief - eating more etc; whilst koi that previously were OK showed stress and began flashing and bottom sitting /clamping.

I haven’t used flukasol before though - only used prazi based treatment. But my observation above was consistent through several treatments. They did eventually all collectively look better after 3-4 days though.

Thanks. Think I'm going to do a 20% water change today (7 days since treatment) and a scrape to see what's going on.

I'm then tempted to use Lernex to treat (never used this before).
