Dead Koi found
Hi all
Noticed a Koi swimming slowly, and not chasing food like the other Koi.
A couple of days later it was dead and floating on the top of the pond.
First time a Koi has died after having them for 4 years.
On first research I thought it was this cotton disease related to bad water quality. But it’s not supposed to be fatal?
Did some tests afterwards and says I got high NO2 &3
So been doing some gradual water changes (20% water change each day over a few days).
Also lowered the amount of food I’m giving the guys.
Checked the other Koi, they look fine and energetic.
Is there anything else I need to worry about or do to avoid more deaths or disease spreading?
Does anyone have any idea what disease this looks like?

It would also be worth scraping a few fish and checking for any parasites.

For the fins to be eaten away like that the water quality / maintenance regime has to be lacking so that would be the priority, then scrapes since if there were parasites they will now be hunting for a new host.
Did you look inside the gills and check what condition they were in?
A gill biopsy would have been a good move at the time you found it, but would be too late now.

No I didn’t inspect the dead koi.
After fishing it out, it was stinking out the whole garden and attracted flies, so wrapped it up and disposed straightaway.
So, I should do an inspection on the other koi by scraping them? Cool. Haven’t done it before so will have a look for some vids.

Water quality wise though, i do a filter clean every week on an EzPod. And it goes into a trickle filter with volcano rock.
The water is super clear, I can see the bottom of the 2m pond, so assumed it’s alright.
I have never done a regular water change though. Which I have started doing now at a 10-20% change each time.
