strange holes in both kohaku dorsal fins

As per the title, all other fishes dorsals are intact but both kohaku's have between 3 to 5 perfectly round small holes in them? read plenty of info but nothing really pin points the problem, reasons range from, chemical exposure, fin rot, bacterial disease, anchor worm, genetic, and more... anyone else seen this? thanks Steve.

Hey Steve, I had this with my Isa Showa this year, after treating with PP a few days later a hole like a fag burn size appeared. It gradually got bigger and then split the fin but didn't make it all the way to the body thankfully and is now nearly back to how it was before. I treated with salt/acriflavine dips every couple of days and this seemed to solve the issue but not sure what caused it even to this day. I would get a close look and maybe do a salt/acriflavine dip to get ahead of it now if it was me personally because I decided to leave it and see if it healed itself and it got far worse before it got better. It wasn't even slightly red when I first saw it either but got quite sore and rotted away pretty badly.

Unlikely to be the cause in this case but 2 known causes would be "gas bubble disease" which creates air bubbles in the fins which can subsequently pop leaving a hole.

Another possibility is white spot once it has completed its life cycle and left the fish, leaving a small pin hole in the fins which can get infected by bacteria and become larger holes.

If its not getting bigger I would leave it.

If it is getting bigger I would net and get some tamodine on a paint/basting brush and brush it on both sides of the fin.

I would only salt bath if there was additional issues, and the fish looks poorly, or if there's lots of holes etc.

    Hi Sephuk,
seems to be more prevelant in Kohaku unless a big coincidence..... the holes sounds very similar to my two, one is from Sakuma the other Taniguchi..

I spoke with Adam Byer at the koi show regading the holes today as he is a well known Kohaku breeder and always happy to help, his views were that its just one of those things, nothing to worry about but obviously ashame its happened, he has seen it before, he has also spoken to others in the koi world about it too seems to be unexplainable, not viral/bacterial.
