    Fish problems

    Hi,
new pond build, put three small koi in that I already had from a small patio pond having checked the water first, they seemed very happy with their new home, then introduced some new fish from a local dealer on Wednesday night, Thursday all seemed fine but today all fish have been very subdued and ate very little, just checked on them and they’re all sat on the bottom hardly moving, two of the original fish are flashing, I’ve tested the water and all is fine as far as I can see, so what’s my best coarse of action? Fluke solve?
only change I can see today is the water has reached 13 degrees, the warmest it’s been since I filled it, don’t know if that’s got any barring on it?
any advice would be much appreciated as new to koi keeping
    thanks
    paul.

sometimes when you add fish to a pond it can upset the fish that were already there for whatever reason, but I wouldn't reach for the fluke solve just because a couple have flashed. I would keep an eye on them for a bit and see what they get up to. To see if you need to treat for anything you need to scrape the fish and look with a microscope rather than blindly dosing the pond with treatments as it will only cause unnecessary stress if its not required and then you have to wait till the treatment is out of the water which can be weeks with some.

It's possible that the fish you added brought in something with them but, as always, it would help us to give advice if you posted the results of the parameters you've tested.

Just been back out and two of the new fish are also flashing now, I’m not geared up to do scrapes etc, all fish look like they’re struggling, quite a good flow in pond and they just getting moved around on the bottom rather than swimming around, should I turn pump off for the night?

pH 8.0, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, can’t remember KH but it was ok for sure
these are only small fish 5-9” in 1650 gallons so not much effect on the water in a few days.

    Hi Paul
I would take the fish back to the outlet you purchased them from and ask them to do a scrape as you say it is probably something they've brought with them - if they don't do scrapes it will tell you a lot about the place - I buy all my fish from one outlet as the two fish I bought from a local garden centre gave all my fish white spot within a week of introduction - all sorted with a treatment - lesson learnt not all Koi outlets are as honest about quarantine ect of new fish

Was there a big fluctuation in water PH and temp from the outlet to your pond - this could have stressed the new fish and stressed fish usually equals health issues?

bought from a fella a clay cross who’s been doing it years, he had a very good setup and seemed very knowledgeable about his fish and fish keeping so I’d be very surprised if the fish had come with a problem.
his holding tank was 14 degrees, my pond was 11 on introduction but this was Wednesday, all fish seemed fine yesterday and all fed well, but all been off today

    Hi Paul

3 degrees is a lot at this time of the year - they may have had a shock - you can loose 3 degrees in 24hrs in a smallish un-heated un-covered pond - in my opinion it's still too early for new fish in an un-heated pond - what temp was it the following morning if it was below 10 deg then that might be your answer

I've still to choose my Xmas present which won't be until early June at this rate this year - unfortunately it's been very cold spring

im at south Anston Sheffield, kitsu koi are just down the road, they’re decent lads and my original fish came from there, so I’m going to pop in this morning and see what they reckon.

Took some scrapes and showed them to fella at kitsu koi and he couldn’t find a single thing amiss, reckons this heavy rain is washing in dust etc from my pond build and messing with the pH level and the fish aren’t liking it, ironically the rain has dropped the water temp today by 1.5 degrees and the fish are swimming about as happy as Larry, some good advice not jumping the gun, if I’d had fluke solve on the shelf I’d have been very tempted to put some in!
