    New koi issues

    Hi all
    Firstly I will give you all the information I can to assist anyone who might be able to help me on the right course of diagnosis and therefore treatment.
    I have spent the last three years building my pond ! A while I know but wanted to get it as good and fit for purpose as funds and time allowed.
    Pond is 13900 litres with 4" bottom drain and 4 returns and wall skimmer.
    Filtration comprises of QK 22 combi drum with 75 litres or k+ media from bottom drain and skimmer goes to midi sieve then through shower with 75 litres of comprises in it.
    Heated by a Thermotech heater.
    Pond was completed September of last year all up and running to make sure I could trouble shoot any teething problems I may encounter before fish arrived from queni koi at the end of march this year.
    K+ was fishless cycled in drums in garage for three months prior to koi arrival. Ammonia cycled Firstly followed by nitrite all according to plan just as Manky Sanke said it would, so many thanks to him for his guidance on how that worked.
    Water parameters have been checked twice a week with Hanna checkers since fish have been introduced on the 29th March and all readings have been good as far as I can tell.
    Water parameters today are
    PH=7.5
    KH=4
    Ammonia =0.21mg/l
    Nitrite 47ppb
    Chlorine =0
    Water temp 18 degrees
    I have introduced only 4 koi goshiki kujaku chagoi and a showa believing low stock to be best for filters and fish. They soon settled in and have been eating well (3 feeds a day) and looking happy as Larry !
    FISH PROBLEM'S
    Around ten days ago the goshiki developed what looked like excess mucus on its back either side of its dorsal fin, this worsened so I decided to do a scrape and check for parasites and found nothing on two slides !?. While I had her out on the mat I cleaned up affected areas dosed with anti bacteria spray and put back. No signs of anything for nearly a week then it started to appear again but also on the head and white patches on pectoral fins and tail. So yesterday I decided to scrape again as i must have missed something first time. What was on the head was also like a Water filled blister that broke as soon as I touched it. The kujaku has also developed the whitefish marks on the edges of his tail too. I did slides on the goshiki chag and kujaku at 200 and 400 with microscope that gave me eye ache and all I found was what I think is a fluke but only one and that took some finding I can tell you. I have previously practiced my scope use on gold fish and a garden centre koi in my old pond. All fish are eating and no sulking or clamped fins as of yet but it will if I don't get on top of this soon. No fish or anything else has been in the new koi pond other than the 4 new koi. I will try and work out how to put pictures on as I've not a clue at the moment as a picture is more helpful than just words. Think i now have pictures ? Any one who could possibly help out it would be much appreciated as I do not want to have to guess what it might be and end up treating with the wrong medication !!!.
    I'd like to thank you all for your posts on pond building filter setups and the general in's and out's of koi keeping as I have read most of whats on here over the course of my build.
    Many thanks Mike B.

    If you go to the bottom of the slide pic, a mm or two right and a cm up is that an out of focus Trich?

    Blimey, you've got good eyesight! Would never have spotted that but you might be onto something there.

    The Kujaku tail looks like carp pox.

    Not sure on the Goshiki, might be excess mucus but wouldn't expect it based on your water parameters and more than perfect pond management thus far, however, if Djstiles is indeed correct about the trich, then that could be a reason for excess mucus.

    That doesn’t look like a fluke.
    There is some carp pox visible on that fin, which isn’t anything to worry about.
    What are you doing for dechlorinating and water changes?

    My goshiki got the same thing, it started mid summer when we had a hot week and it was in the temp pool. I thought it was sunburn or hikai but seems to come and go.

    Hello all, thank you for your replies. Djstiles999 yes I have zoomed in on where you said and I think you might be right. I had my parasite pictures out and was looking for all knowing that some required higher magnification to find but I never saw that so how many others have I missed !?. In reply to your question Feline I am on a trickle in and out through a 3 stage with an extra single 10" filter inline so basically 4 stage. With hindsight I should have gone big blu but thats what I had bought at the time and for the moment I have no Chlorine in my trickle in. I am changing just under 10% a week.
    I had thought about sunburn but thought it hasn't been that hot and they have shade if wanted.
    So should I scrape again and look better ? Feeling like I have messed the goshiki around enough getting her out twice already. Not sure what to do for the best. Thank you

    If you’re worried about over stressing the goshiki then scrape 3 or 4 of the others again just to see what pops up? sometimes it’s a fish who seems perfectly fine that gives you your answers when you scrape at random.

    Evening Feline. Have done scrapes on the other three koi after work this evening and have given them a real good look over and have found nothing at all , even going to 400 from 200 if I thought I could see anything and the only movement was the water flow on the slide. So I'm a bit stumped at the moment, will just have to see how it goes. Thanks for your help
