Koi showing red veins
I have completed a half water change since finding the red veins on my koi. They are quiet lying on the bottom. Some are also striking the bottom so could be irritated. I have included a photo.

Hi Jess,
Red veins is often a sign of stress, as is ‘striking off the bottom of the pond’.
A number of things can cause stress and the behaviour your have witnessed including:
Poor water quality - have you tested?
Parasites - have you undertaken a mucus scrape?
Reaction to chemicals - have you treated the pond recently?
Addition of new koi?
Dramatic temperature fluctuations- this will most likely lead to dormancy
Chlorine - have you changed your dechlorinator regularly?
Happy to help further upon receipt of some further information
Cheers

In the photo it looks more serious than just red veins, it looks quite sore.
As Gaz says, what are your water parameters?
If they are all spot on you will need to do some scrapes.

thankyou for my replies. I am going to ripples this morning for new test kits
I did buy a small new koi from ripples so I will ask them.
I have a 16,000 litre pond and never had a problem with my fish. 4 days ago there was 1 dead fish and 1 dead frog. No signs of disease. We had a visit from a 2 1/2 foot grass snake, but not sure if it went in the pond. I will post the tests later. Thankyou again

Hi all tests were normal, hard water was very high, so hoping some rain will soften it.
I have started a bacterial treatment, with an extra air line for my 3 1/2 foot sturgeon who is showing no signs of illness. Very confusing. I am in Shropshire.

Hi Jess,
If the flashing behaviour etc... continues then you would be best advised undertaking a mucus scrape.

Hey, did you dechlorinate the water you put in?
Was that with liquid dechlorinator? Sodium thiosulphate? Or a carbon filter?
Best plants to remove Nitrate
pug has a very impressive veg filter on his pond, have a look at some of his his youtube videos....
