Formalin / salt
If running trickle shower filter on quarantine, what time frame am i looking at before adding salt as suspect bacterial infection on fins and mouth. Water tests fine and scraps clear, filter switched back on to clear med's . Thank you for any advise and response in advance Dean ???

Hi Dean,
Given the thread title do you have Formalin in the water? If so, when was this added and was it added with MG or in isolation?
What salt dose are you considering?
Cheers

Hi Gaz say 3 days a go added MG and Formalin from seperate bottles for stronger treatment, have now had shower running say day and 1/2 to remove from q/t as wishing to add salt. I was wandering what timescale was needed to add salt when shower would hopefully strip out Formalin so safe to add salt. Suspect Bacterial problem as whiteness seen on tips of pec's tail and redness around mouth area. Quarantine 500g and hoping to add say 2% salt solution or lower to aid healing with agriflaverin. Will take any advise pls as really dont want to loose fish, thank you Dean ??

I would leave it a couple of weeks and a 25% water change before adding salt. Don’t salt to 2% unless you keep marine fish!
The usual concentrations used are 0.3% or 0.6%, if you go for the higher you need to increase over a few days to get there.
Why did you add FMG if the scrapes were negative if you don’t mind me asking?2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Hi mate,
Apologies for the delay in responding.
I have used FMG at above bottle advices in the past when the pond had .5% salt and the fish were fine (*or at least based on what can be seen) around 9months ago. My understanding is when F is mixed with MG (I don’t know the reasons why) the F is not as toxic with the salt and does not have the impact neat F would do. I’m sure there are one or two on here that could explain the chemical nature in interested.
How FMG would react with Acriflavin I am not so sure and would certainly advocate waiting and WCs.
*i understand and fully respect Feline is a vet so far more qualified than me in this area, so this is a sharing of personal experience and not advice against Feline’s more qualified response. She is also a Moderator and I don’t want kicking off here
As per the prior post, salting the to 2% should not be done as this dose will kill the koi over time (relatively short too) - this dose would be more akin to a salt bath / dip on an individual basis.
I hope this helps
Cheers
