Thread: Koi died....

    Koi died....

Bit gutted really, this was a nice orange koi that I got a couple of months ago (not sure on proper name) came out this morning after torrential thunderstorms and rain yesterday to find this floating upside down apart from dark colouring on anus, can't see any physical issues (don't have microscope).

Only thing that's happened has been the storms and I fed some small chopped up prawns and mussels yesterday.

Also had a goldfish laying at side of pond so assuming that jumped out during the storm.

    What a shame

Do you have plenty of air going in the pond?

probably not, got a small airstone, the 30m stream & the filter return.

had been looking for a 60-70lph air pump just yesterday.

will do some water tests to ensure no big spikes.

I would not just change water, first you should test to understand if you have an issue...

think you need to invest in an air pump asap and a water test kit if you havent got one

Yep got a 60lpm pump coming and do have a test kit.

PH was actually down to 6.5 from a constant 7-7.5
    Ammonia 0.25
    Nitrites 0.25
    Phosphates 0.25

So that to me suggests you may have had a PH crash, what is your kH value?

KH is very important to monitor, so I am always amazed when test kit companies do not include such in their kits at times.

Kh no idea, will have to grab that as an extra.

Suggestions on what other bits I should be testing for?

Shall I grab another full kit or are there extras I can purchase?

(Sorry for the noob questions, naivety thought they were the main things to test for as Gaz says, that's what was in the kit!)

Columbo test lab kits have the range (other than chlorine), however as you have API currently, I would probably buy the API KH to complete for the time being mate

Hiya CB, sorry I don’t know much about your pond. Is it a recent build? How are you topping up / treating top up water?
as. Rule if u have worries about pH and you have an ammonia and nitrite reading then I would be doing daily emergency water changes (so long as you can dechlorinate the water you use to top up with).
‘The pH you stated is not low enough to be. PH crash without further evidence. Low O2 might be.a much more likely reason for fish deaths in this hot humid weather with thunderstorms . We need a bit more info to guess more than that I’m afraid.

Pond is 2004, however suppose in reality liner got replaced about 3 years ago, it's approximately 36k litres (weird shape with ledges, etc 20ft x 14ft x 4.5ft and was/is a "natural pond" that had some basic garden centre koi and goldfish until it seems a heron picked them all off, was replaced with 6 goldfish that's turned into about 120 and I've added 10 6-8 inch koi 2 months ago and a further 12 2inch koi 4 weeks ago.

main Filter for the pond with 8000lph pump is just a 3 bay + built in vortex that's only been running 4 months.
Have a biotec (or something) pod that's about 5 years old that runs from a 6000lph pump up to the 30ft "stream".

got a pathetic 450lph air pump with 2 stones in.

More and more fish have been flashing mainly when fed, this one I hadn't seen flash once, but with the high ammonia, was recommended to start doing big fish water changes, so I waited for the sodium thiosulphate to be delivered before I do that.

I did an approximate 20% water change , used sodium thiosulphate (spelling) used 24grams boiled up, then added to pond. Did that about 3 days before the koi died, due to high ammonia of 0.25 and hadn't fed until the morning of the storm day.

have now got an air disc going in, approx 3000 lph (got a 3600 air pump and got a little bit split off to my bio bay)

and also got the test kit, just tested at the tap:

    Kh - 14 drops
    Gh - 12 drops

does that sound correct (must admit the Kh drops were coming out quickly, so not sure if they were getting a "full" drop) ?

    pond test
    Kh - 10 drops
    Gh - 9 drops

the water supply is Sutton & South East - 2019 report here:

    https://seswater.co.uk/-/media/files...s/l01_2019.pdf

    Helpful facts:
    Hardness
To help you set your domestic appliances, the average hardness results from our 2019 operational
monitoring programme are shown in different units below:
Please note that during 2020, the hardness of the water supplying your property may vary from what is shown
below. This is due to some ongoing maintenance of our softening equipment at our Elmer Treatment Works.
For more details on Water Hardness and Scale please check out our fact sheet.
(mg/l = milligrammes per litre is the same as parts per million (ppm))
    Chlorine
Chlorine is used to disinfect the water supply and make sure there are no harmful bacteria in the water. We
also add a small amount of ammonia to form monochloramine, which has a less noticeable chlorine taste
    and odour.
    Fluoride
We do not add fluoride to our drinking water supplies. There is, however, approximately 0.13 mg/l naturally
    occurring fluoride present.
    Nitrate
The average nitrate level in this supply zone is 32.2 mg/l. This nitrate comes from the source waters
supplying the treatment works. The PCV or allowable limit for nitrate in drinking water is 50 mg/l.
    Other tests
In addition to the tests listed in the Regulations, water companies also carry out extra tests for monitoring
purposes. The following average results for this supply zone may also be of interest:
    Alkalinity 211.4 mg/l HCO3
    Magnesium 3.3 mg/l Mg
Total Dissolved Solids 334 ppm (calculated based on conductivity measurement)
