    Treating an egg bound koi

Hi all. First time poster here so apologies if I get any etiquette wrong. I have Koi approx 12 inches long that appears to be very egg bound. Having not come across this before I really do not know what I can do. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi John, any chance you could get a photo up of the fish, most seem to use Tapatalk to upload photos, ( don't ask me no idea )
'' a picture paints a thousand words '' and people will want to know all about your pond set up......filters,
water test results, how long the pond has been up and running for etc.......the more info the better really.
Hopefully you will get the answer you are looking for shortly .

    Hi John,

When you say ‘egg bound’ have you tried to spawn with a male? How long has the Koi had the eggs to your knowledge?

If eggs stay ‘bound’ they can sour and eventually kill the Koi.

Where a Koi is unable to release the eggs, a hormone injection can be given which to my understanding disintegrates the sack containing the eggs and they are then easier to release (either by the koi or gentle ‘squeezing’ towards the vent) - this is a reasonably complex process and requires treatments / injections that are not freely available, so you may need some assistance.

    Where are you located?

    Cheers

Hi Anne and Gaz. Thank you for your help. Unfortunately on removing the fish from the pond it was obviously in far worse shape than it appeared from looking at it in the pond and I decided that the best thing to do was despatch it quickly and humanely. A Shane as it was my only Shiro Utsuri but at least I now know what early signs to look out for in the future. Once again thanks for your replies.
