    Trichodina visible damage

    Hi guys,

I've scoured the net for pics of the damage Trich can do to a fish, but to no avail.

All my fish have been flashing, not massively, so I scraped a few of them over the weekend and found Trich on one of them.

The fish I found them on is a bekko, and it had a red sore patch, it actually looked open, at one side of its dorsal fin, and another red patch at the other side that looked like raised blood vessels tightly grouped together. Now both of these patches cleared up in just over a week.

I started NT LABS FMG over the weekend, and I've just noticed this morning that a Doitsu bekko I have has now got a sore patch (raised blood vessel type) on its side. I do remember reading somewhere that parasites can often cause more damage during treatment as they try to burrow away from their attacker. Do you think (crystal balls at the ready) this could be the case?

    Cheers,

    Jay

Not sure , Jason to be honest .

It might be worth isolating the fish , if you can . Or at lest giving him a dip , to remove any parasites .

It could be that the fish has other issues , maybe due to bacterial infection or similar , which is making him vulnerable to parasite attack .

Are your water parameters ok ?

    Hi Colin,

    Thanks for the reply.

Water parameters are all good, except for high nitrate, around 50. As I said the scrape only found Trich on 1 fish, the others were clear.

As it's the same as the other fish that got rid of it quickly I'll give it a week before I panic, as I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere that parasites tend to burrow and damage fish when they are under attack from treatments.

    Cheers,

    Jay

My take on it is the parasites wear the fish down and irritate it, its the combination of stresses the rubbing and flashing that then cause the redness.
If not treated this gets worse and ulcerates leaving a it open to bacterial infections.

i agree with Hippo that it may have other issues, parasites and bacteria will soon multiply on a koi that has a reduce immune system and struggle to fight them off.

    Hi Sim,

Thanks for the reply. The pond is in the middle of an FMG treatment, and the redness has only come out 2 days into this treatment. The fish appeared perfectly healthy prior to this.

Anyway, I'm pretty satisfied with what the issue is and am going to keep an eye on it.

    Cheers,

    Jay
