Thread: Eggs?

    Eggs?

Sorry about the long range shot I‘ll get it in a bowl for a better look tomorrow, but on first impressions, eggs or something more sinister? Koi is not eating but otherwise swimming normally.

I had a look a week ago, but t was difficult to discern if it was swollen or not.

From the top view in the bowl she doesn't look to bad, but looking at the back end of her in the pond it doesn't look quite right .
When my female was carrying eggs she was sort of rounded / full bodied shape all the way down, looked like she had been
over eating, but once she had spawned she looked really thin it was quite surprising, but being a women it didn't take her long
to look back to normal again after a few good feeds . So I don't think its eggs but lets see what the others have to say

Overnight, the swelling has gone completely, Last night she was huge, but now nothing. I am worried though, This morning I had to search for her and she was propped up next to an air stone in the corner. When I turn the air off she come out and swims with the the others, but soon returns. It’s been nearly two weeks since I’ve seen her eat anything so I’m a bit worried. I hope it’s just a bit of post natal and she will perk up.
I’ve been keeping koi for around twelve years now, and this is the first time I’ve ever seen eggs. I don’t know if this behaviour is normal or not.

Did you notice the males chasing her around the pond and pushing her against things to get her to release her eggs,
it gets quite rough and a lot of splashing of the water goes on and sometimes the females can get damaged.
Maybe have a look on youtube '' Koi spawning '' to give you some idea of what goes on. I'm not convinced she's had
eggs though and something doesn't feel quite right with the way she seems to be behaving now, I hope I'm wrong and
probably am. Good luck with her Balder and lets hope she will be ok

Have you actually seen any eggs ? if you have, then she could just be sulking so give her a day or two

No, no chasing, no eggs visible, and no change in interest or behaviour from any other koi. She went from enormous to nothing overnight, so unless it was a huge fart, she laid eggs and they ended up in the drum, or someone ate them.

[QUOTE=balder;340061 so unless it was a huge fart, Atta girl...…. maybe she will feel better now.
I would just keep a close eye on her and see how she goes, maybe RS will comment on this thread when he see's
it....he's good at the medical / parasite side of things with koi and give his opinion.

    Best of luck Mark.

I'm pleased to hear her swelling has gone down. Just some thoughts I had reading this thread - spawning often happens at night so there is a chance you may have not witnessed any obvious signs and the drum could well have removed any evidence. If she is not pineconing and the swelling was even both sides, it does point to egg bound, esp as it's gone down so suddenly. Could it have been constipation?

I'm wondering if the bottom lurking may be just her feeling a bit crap, and a bit of time to recover from the egg binding may see her bounce back in a couple days.

Does she sink really fast when she comes up? If so that may be a bit of swim bladder imbalance possibly from so much internal swelling? When she does swim, does she look normal or as though she is struggling? That can be another sign of bouyancy probs (my baby Ochiba has this at the mo). Has she developed any sores or ulcers from the distension or bottom sitting? If so there could be some bacterial infection she's fighting?

'' Spawning often happen at night,'' not in my pond it doesn't , i've stood and watched mine spawn in the middle of the day on more than
one occasion, and funnily enough mornings seem to be the preferred time...But hey, if the times right then the times right .

Did you by Any chance notice the pond looking like a swamp the morning after the swelling went down?

There ways zero sign of any spawning activity, no interest from other koi, no foam or anything. Just a very swollen koi which lost it all overnight.
It’s been four days since this happened, and although the eggs or whatever it was, has disappeared, the koi is far from ok. She just sits mid water next to an air stone, no interest in anything. Obviously likes being around the other fish, but she doesn’t look good. Her swimming is quite lethargic, and she has developed a thick mucus layer. I don’t want to remove her from the pond but I think I may have to. Although to be honest, I’m not sure exactly what I can do for her. I’ll setup my vat, heat and add a little salt, but what else can I do? My scrapes have been clear.
