PH, KH Query
The PH in my pond has always been high (last 30 years), currently 8.3, but I've just tested the KH and its zero. I'm a bit worried about buffering the KH in case I push the PH any higher. Anyone got any advise please.

What is your KH normally?
I think the first thing I would do is retest to make sure the KH result really is 0.
In terms of water chemistry I am not the expert, but if you add Na Bicarb the pH will buffer at 8.4, i.e. it will not get any higher than that.

Hi borderDave,
As deejaysmi said adding bicarbonate of soda will raise the KH. You need to be careful how much bicarbonate you add at a time as you don’t want to raise the PH too quickly. The PH will stop at about 8.4. If you search for Mankey Sankey website he explains the chemistry behind this. I followed his guidance recently as my KH had dropped to 2. By adding bicarb I was able to raise it to 7. My PH was 8.3 in the morning and 8.5 in the evening after adding the bicarb.
You can get cheap bicarb on eBay

Thanks for your advise. I retested the KH with another test kit and it was 1. I have buffered in the past few years, but now I know the PH won't go above 8.4 I'm a lot happier to continue putting bicarbs in. Thanks for your help.
