Possible fin rot...
I have noticed over the weekend my Goshiki seems to be flashing a little and has a small white bit on the top middle part of its dorsal fin as well as on its tail which almost looks like its kind of trailing behind the fin a little. Seems like it hasn't settled in too well as I thought I saw him flash yesterday but wasn't 100% as it was behind the jet stream from the bottom drain.
I don't currently have a net to catch the fish for a closer inspection nor a microscope or knowledge of using one to determine issues that way however I will do a full set of water tests tomorrow evening as I only observed the behaviour just now looking through the window with a torch shining in the pond.
Any ideas what this could be just based on that information? I only got the goshiki last weekend and the other 3 fish are fine. Has also been the greediest of fish when I have trickled a tiny amount of food in over the weekend so not lost appetite etc.

Hi Samp,
i had a couple of new fish that did exactly what you have explained, after a while the both got over it and their fins returned back to normal, i think different water perameters and temps can cause this, one of my fish has some lumps and strange marks on his dorsal and tail fins, it looks like carp pox which apparently is untreatable and just one of those things, its not contagious, is the goshiki flashing after eating ?? has it been introduced to colder water or warmer water compared to where it came from??

Yes I think it’s the different water as when it first went in it came up to the surface a few times as did 2 of the other 3 before settling down and the water was fine from a water test, just a bit hard but definitely a temperature difference too. Since then the other 3 I haven’t seen anything out of the ordinary only the goshiki flashing last night which had I not looked into the pond whilst the dogs done their business I wouldn’t have seen at all.

just to update; The issue hasn't got any worse, looks better if anything and until now I hadn't seen any more flicking. I turned off the air on the bottom drain just now, a different fish decided to flick off it! No signs of anything wrong with the fish thats the first I've seen of that fish flicking. Could it literally be telling me to stick the air back on? as soon as I did it stopped! no unusual behaviour from any of the fish observed since the original post. I was mid water change when it done it. Could it be the fish flanking because the air stopped? this was the case the first time too. I only changed bout 7% of the water and this was the first change since adding the fish etc.

I had the same problem with my fish when built new pond. the fact is they don t like change. if I turn my air off they go nuts and attack the dome by flicking off it. and in time get ulcers.
It took me a few months to fathom this out. I now leave the air permently on all the time. and there great. but if I stop it. they go nuts. weird though. even tried it on a timer. that did nt work.
if your water parameters are good. that's more then likely the problem

I will check tomorrow as only changed the water last night. about 5pm. I leave the air on all the time at the moment apart from a few minutes sometimes when feeding. They are generally fine but both occasions I witnessed it was just after I tuned the dome off so makes me wonder if they are just drama queens!

just to update, I turned the air off today and the same fish swam down to it and flashed on it straight away for a bit before just carrying on as normal and feeding fine etc no signs of anything on its body. Didn't happen at all when the air was on!

Well those figures alone wouldn't be the cause of the flashing so at least that is eliminated.

I need a microscope. it's on my to buy list with a net, as I don't want to put my carp net in the pond to risk any contamination despite the fact I always dry it the correct way in sunlight etc. I turned the air off just now and the Shusai went straight down to it and had a little rub so I think that one maybe doesn't like the change.

Thanks I shall look into it and give it a go.I need to get a microscope too. I do have some Propolis which I have for fishing to help any marks on the fish etc will this be worth using if I can get it out in the meantime and apply to the white mark on the fin?

Just to update, the Goshiki still has the whiter mark on its fin which is basically like a little bit missing on the fin in the middle with a whiter edge to it. I have noticed the carp has a similar thing on its pec which is almost like a hole punch has been put half way over the fin then punched a little half circle into the fin and its a white edge to the mark. Then my shusai has a few little splits between the ventral fins but not at the edges, actually in the middle like a little hole and my chagoi has a little clouding in the fins too. The shusai fins dont seem to have anything wrong other than the little splits but the fins are white anyway. The best way to describe it is if you look above at the fins on the chagoi, around the edges they are more of a solid colour whereas the rest of the fin is almost transparent. There is the occasional flick from the fish but not a regular occurrence. I would net one and get a picture but because my UV's are not wired in my water looks like pea soup at the moment.Any ideas? I have acrivin and FMG available as well as ulcer spray.today is the 7th day after the first dose of FMG as I thought it was white spot. The fish are otherwise acting normal and happy. Greedily feeding when fed and although I havent tested my parameters since last weekend, since I first mentioned this I have not had a single water test with the results any less than spot on so I know its not that. Using ST with water changes by adding the full amount before into the airstream from the ABD then filling with a hose which takes about an hour. I will try and get a picture if I can I just have to be lucky to get one with the net.
