Alparex - Total Loss
Hi All
All koi and Sturgeon were fine, feeding well heated to 13.5 deg but one of my Koi looked like it may have Trich so having two large Sturgeon I treated with Alparex. 5 days later I have NO FISH. Some of these fish I have had for 10 years....!
Pool Details
8900Gallons
Filtration Profidrum, 2 x Ultrabeads, BHM Shower, 2 x Spin drifter bottom drains, Amalgam UV, 3 x Blue Eco 320 all about six months old after total refit.
Stocking levels very low 8 fish
Water tested with Palintest
Before buffering KH
PH 7.7
Ammonia 0
KH 4.2
Nitrite 0.042
After buffering KH Pre treatment
PH 7.95
KH 7.5
Ammonia 0
After first treatment fish were still feeding but as the pool is 8ft deep and the water turner very very green it was not possible to see the fish to check. I also have a polycarbonate cover. My wife checked on the fish when i was working away for three days, on my return i did an inspection at night with a torch i noticed four dead fish and 4 very ill ones. I started immediate water changes via Hilux water filter but lost another three fish
Water quality during /after deaths PH 7.9 KH 5.8 Ammonia 0.04 Nitrite 0.196
The water is always like glass no foam but as you can see from photos its like sludge on top.
The only thing i can think is that the polcarb top and shower cover is 99.9 sealed, has this stopped something gassing off???? The two spin drifters always run at 100%
It’s to late but some input would be good

What an absolute tragedy. So gutted for you but it might be as you say, that your pond cover was too air tight for gassing off. Small Fry had a lucky escape about a month back with a similar problem but caught it just in time.

Cheshire,
There have been a few incidents where using Alparex has caused problems and I may be able to throw some light on your case but (sorry everyone else) I obviously cannot become involved in this in an open forum. That doesn't stop anyone else helping of course but I have to be careful what I say in public. If you wish, PM me and I'll see what I can do.Last edited by Manky Sanke; 07-03-2016 at 07:09 PM.

Gutted for you mate. That is such a horrible tragedy. The foaming could have been due to the excess mucus and it would of shedded of the fish when they died? Not got experience with alparex myself but never heard of a wipeout with it before. Maybe could have been because of the covers? Im sure you checked but was it in date and correct dosage? Again my sympathies mate.

Did you check what the pH was after discovering the tragedy?
What dose of the Alparex did you use?
Any idea what your pond oxygen levels normally are at this temp? (I know not everyone has the test kit for this, but with sturgeon in there handy to be able to check it.)
Sorry to hear it went so wrong for you.
A shame you were not around to monitor and the covers were on perhaps hiding what was going on from being spotted in time.

Hi Feline
The PH only changed from PH 7.95 before to 7.9..... I do not have test for oxygen but with two aerated bottom drains (on full) and big shower things should be good. Fish were not looking like they were short of air. Very very slow gill movements, swimming on side, very inflamed whites (bloodshot)
Even with covers off being 8ft deep cant see bottom because of green Alperex colour....

I've used the equivalent of Alparex myself (mixed own ingredients up) and I could easily see the fish and bottom while it was active. That's why I am just wondering what dose you used. Are you 100% sure of your pond volume or is it an estimate based on measurements?

Pond filled with water meter so should be quite accurate. Dosed as per instruction and checked my maths a number of times

Must admit i could see nothing in my pond when i used it it was a radio active green colour .
Looked a different brighter green than your picture , can possibly find the pic if you want to compare .
Perhaps the alperax is slightly different than mixing your own ?

It was crazy toxic green at the start, some of the above pictures were taken after 48Hrs of constant trickle water change

A keeper very close to me had serious issues with Alparex, and had to do major water changes to avoid loosing fish.
