[QUOTE=Eddie Goldman;373237]
There is absolutely zero in the instructions about KH.
Hi Eddie. Sorry for the loss of your fish mate, but here it is in the booklet in black and white.

So sad to hear of this Eddie.
You will not be the last, my thoughts are that it may not necessarily be traditional pH crash as such (where the Koi are killed by toxic ammonia) but rather a massive pH shock as the pH suddenly plummets where there isnt enough KH to give a buffer.
From discussions I had with Columbo some time ago they suggested some contra reaction could be possible with other chemicals; Flubenol being one.

Day 3 and no losses yet although not eating much which I suppose is not surprising. I’m a bit worried about the chag. Sometimes he swims around like all the others but he is also spending a lot of time in various corners at the surface, he looks like he grazing on algae but hard to tell, he also takes the occasional mealworm from the edge of the pond and then spits it again. He’s not gasping or breathing rapidly but his scales look a little blood shot. He also swims through the current of the return (but sideways, not head on).

Every new set of instructions seems to have a higher KH requirement than previous instructions.
And a longer waiting period between using Flubenol and Alparex.
But no mention of temperature where for the full eradication of parasites Colombo actually recommended a temperature of 15C or above, although the product itself can be used safely at lower temps.
Also interesting that I've read about people mixing their own "Alparex" matching the composition on the label which has been unsuccessful in eradicating Costia etc, yet when they've subsequently used Alparex the product it has worked. Makes you wonder if it contains something else not listed in the ingredients.
For the record I've used Alparex with success.

Alparex day 4.
Filter bacteria may have been affected as ammonia showing 0.25 and Nitrite 0. Ammonia is normally 0. Got some EA Pure+ starter gel but not sure when to use it.
Nitrate 10+
pH 8.0 kH 8.0 GH15
Fish not eating (or eating/spitting) but otherwise not looking too distressed. Doitsu Sanke looking quite bloodshot along its back.

That’s the problem, can’t find anything about that in the instructions, it just says the product will naturally break down with time. I think I read somewhere that UV will help get rid of it. My temperature is at 20.8c so a week should be enough to zap all the whitespot. I’m going to start dropping it back down to 18c gradually. Not sure when to re-seed the filter but needs to be soon as ammonia is up. Maybe some charcoal in the bio is a good idea?

On the 13th April I started a thread on the forum asking if I can use Alparex with salt. While waiting for answers back from the forum I contacted Colombo by E-mail asking the same question. And they answered back saying yes I can use salt with Alparex at 0.3%. While waiting for there answer back to me I phoned Queni Koi and asked them the same question, and they answered Yes, and said they use Alparex with salt in there quarantine tanks. So If Queni Koi are using Alparex I can't see any problem with it otherwise they wouldn't be using it. I personally think any failure with Alparex is down to water parameters in some way, I don't know what way, but it must be some way or it wouldn't be OK for most and not for the few. Or the only other thing I can think of that it can be is incorrect dosage.

Hi all,
My understanding (and without any liability attaching to me or Aurora Koi Ltd) while it still has a strong green colour it’s “active” although the strength of it will be falling each day. When it turns dark it’s done.
Timescales will clearly vary pond by pond due to the numerous factors which can influence the length of the green remaining.
If in doubt leave it out and choose another product.
Cheers

Personally, I would WC when Alparex darkens and then start adding gel to the media gradually over a couple of weeks
Closely monitor water readings and feed accordingly should the filter be ‘impacted’ too adversely by the treatment.
cheers

Well, thought it would never happen to me, but I've spent the last 13 hours trying to save my Koi after administering Alparex.
Have used it before with no issues whatsoever and favoured it over FMG as the Koi still asked for food throughout the last treatment and didn't have even the slightest reaction to it, yet it completely obliterated Costia / Chilodonella.
Not this time.
At time of administration:
Temperature 13C
pH 8.3
KH 11
Gradually dripped the dose over the return, took 3 hours before the full first dose was in.
Koi shoaling together and doing laps of the pond - Same as they do for most treatments but everything looked Ok.
Checked on them at midnight and a few were bottom sitting and a few head up / tail down at the surface. Trying not to panic I increased oxygen to 80+ lpm.
This morning things looked bad, 2 or 3 at the surface not moving, no reaction to touching them. 3 or 4 on the bottom, fins fully stretched out but not moving. All Koi that I was able to study looked extremely veiny.
pH was now at 8.2 (That is my normal level).
O2 levels between 5 and 8 mg/l.
Had hose on full bore all day changing water. Only just over the last couple of hours have the bottom sitters started being more active with a brief swim around before returning to the bottom, and I still have one hanging at the surface in the corner not moving (opposite corner to the returns), but she will now swim off when you go near, then return a minute later.
The bottle I used was the same bottle from last year - it was opened 10 Months ago and label states use within 12 months.
The last treatment administered to the pond was Alparex 10 Months ago, no other treatments have been necessary although I have previously administered Virkon following a mouth injury and a couple of raised scales. It is well over a year since I last administered any fluke related treatments.
The only difference between last year and the present time is the fact the Koi are bigger, and therefore oxygen demands greater. However the O2 readings using a Tetra test kit were by no means dangerously low as far as I can understand. that said, if I was seeing this in someone else's pond my first thought would be lack of oxygen.
No Koi have been gasping, quite the opposite where they appear not to be breathing at all, but there have been spells with a couple of the bottom sitters having laboured breathing.
If I'd added a 2nd dose today as per the instructions I would almost certainly be looking at big losses.
I've no explanation for why this has happened.
At the moment I have 4 Koi out of 14 that I'm concerned about and the one at the surface I'm very concerned about. I've not lost a single Koi in 33 years of fishkeeping, and definitely do not want to lose any under these circumstances.
I did not set up a QT in advance because I had no reason to think I'd need it (plus it wouldn't hold more than a couple of Koi anyway).Last edited by RS2OOO; 10-05-2021 at 09:12 PM.
