You can only rectify hard water by using RO really, so you wouldn’t want to be doing that unless it was something you already had running.
    Thanks for that

Given what we`ve seen , these issues seem to happen where low KH and PH are a factor , so I`ll leave well alone

    [QUOTE=Eddie Goldman;373237]

There is absolutely zero in the instructions about KH.

Hi Eddie. Sorry for the loss of your fish mate, but here it is in the booklet in black and white.

So sad to hear of this Eddie.

You will not be the last, my thoughts are that it may not necessarily be traditional pH crash as such (where the Koi are killed by toxic ammonia) but rather a massive pH shock as the pH suddenly plummets where there isnt enough KH to give a buffer.

From discussions I had with Columbo some time ago they suggested some contra reaction could be possible with other chemicals; Flubenol being one.

Day 3 and no losses yet although not eating much which I suppose is not surprising. Iím a bit worried about the chag. Sometimes he swims around like all the others but he is also spending a lot of time in various corners at the surface, he looks like he grazing on algae but hard to tell, he also takes the occasional mealworm from the edge of the pond and then spits it again. Heís not gasping or breathing rapidly but his scales look a little blood shot. He also swims through the current of the return (but sideways, not head on).

Every new set of instructions seems to have a higher KH requirement than previous instructions.

And a longer waiting period between using Flubenol and Alparex.

But no mention of temperature where for the full eradication of parasites Colombo actually recommended a temperature of 15C or above, although the product itself can be used safely at lower temps.

Also interesting that I've read about people mixing their own "Alparex" matching the composition on the label which has been unsuccessful in eradicating Costia etc, yet when they've subsequently used Alparex the product it has worked. Makes you wonder if it contains something else not listed in the ingredients.

For the record I've used Alparex with success.

    Alparex day 4.

Filter bacteria may have been affected as ammonia showing 0.25 and Nitrite 0. Ammonia is normally 0. Got some EA Pure+ starter gel but not sure when to use it.

    Nitrate 10+
    pH 8.0 kH 8.0 GH15
Fish not eating (or eating/spitting) but otherwise not looking too distressed. Doitsu Sanke looking quite bloodshot along its back.

Thatís the problem, canít find anything about that in the instructions, it just says the product will naturally break down with time. I think I read somewhere that UV will help get rid of it. My temperature is at 20.8c so a week should be enough to zap all the whitespot. Iím going to start dropping it back down to 18c gradually. Not sure when to re-seed the filter but needs to be soon as ammonia is up. Maybe some charcoal in the bio is a good idea?

On the 13th April I started a thread on the forum asking if I can use Alparex with salt. While waiting for answers back from the forum I contacted Colombo by E-mail asking the same question. And they answered back saying yes I can use salt with Alparex at 0.3%. While waiting for there answer back to me I phoned Queni Koi and asked them the same question, and they answered Yes, and said they use Alparex with salt in there quarantine tanks. So If Queni Koi are using Alparex I can't see any problem with it otherwise they wouldn't be using it. I personally think any failure with Alparex is down to water parameters in some way, I don't know what way, but it must be some way or it wouldn't be OK for most and not for the few. Or the only other thing I can think of that it can be is incorrect dosage.

Its killed fish where there has been a recent flubendazole fluke treatment that’s still lingering in the water Steve. That’s why they’ve added the ‘not within a month of other treatments’ blurb.

    Hi all,

My understanding (and without any liability attaching to me or Aurora Koi Ltd) while it still has a strong green colour it’s “active” although the strength of it will be falling each day. When it turns dark it’s done.

Timescales will clearly vary pond by pond due to the numerous factors which can influence the length of the green remaining.

If in doubt leave it out and choose another product.

    Cheers

Personally, I would WC when Alparex darkens and then start adding gel to the media gradually over a couple of weeks

Closely monitor water readings and feed accordingly should the filter be ‘impacted’ too adversely by the treatment.

    cheers
