    Cheap Acers

Often see posts asking about Acers and where to get them etc.

That intrigued me and after looking them up I decided I wanted one but noticed they can be pricey.

Anyway, popped into Asda yesterday and noticed they are selling various colours, between 60cm and 80cm for just £8

This is apparently across many of the bigger stores.

Picked one up which looks like this one:

Nice one bud Cheap Acers i have a red acer (bloodgood palmatum) that i picked up for a similar price, think it was £5 from wilcos about 15+ yr ago. It was a twiglet at the time lol but Its still going strong today, its a bit bonsai though as its been kept in a smallish pot most of its life until a few years ago. Also had a bad die back/canker on its main leader (centre upwards) branch so had to cut it out years ago and this stunted it also. Other than that its been a cracking acer Cheap Acers

I have an acer that i grew from seed collected on my honeymoon 23 years ago.

Grown in a pot it gets trimmed during summer and watered when its really dry, other than that, never fed it a thing - its beautiful.

I used ti dabble in bonsai creation and an acer I got as a mere twig for £2 eventually I planted out in the garden because I got fed up of needing to water its tiny pot several times a day. Around 20 years later Its over 30 foot high

Popped past Asda again, they've had more Acer deliveries, one or 2 looked bigger than mine, but more than happy with the one I got.

They've also got Salix Integras for a tenner - Japanese Willow, around 1 metre high. The missus picked one up. Recommended around fish ponds apparently!

An acer is basically a maple tree.

the pot restricts its growth so you can make bonsai or a smaller tree.

Plant it in the ground, it will grow like a tree.

several species of acer though and some are naturally more vigourous than others....

Asda now have loads of smaller Acers for just £3 each. Approx. 25-30cm.

Still doing the big ones for £8 each, but they don't seem quite as big from when I got mine.

    Acer Care..

    Pruning and trainingPropagationCultivar SelectionProblems

    Cultivation notes

Acer palmatum*is a small deciduous tree, which has been in cultivation for over three hundred years in Japan.*Sometimes called the mountain maple it is found at altitudes up to 1,100m (3,600ft).*It is also indigenous to forested areas in Korea and China and as far south as Taiwan. The species can attain heights of 8-9m (26-30ft) in fifty years, depending on growing conditions, but most cultivars are small, slow-growing trees.

If your soil is slightly acidic, sandy, well-drained loam with a good amount of organic matter, then you have the perfect conditions to*grow Japanese maples. Do not worry if you have not; most can be grown in other soils. However, they will not tolerate wet, dry or very alkaline conditions.

Japanese maples will grow best in a sheltered position. Red and purple leaved cultivars need some sun to develop fully their dark hues. Variegated Japanese maples need partial shade to prevent the afternoon sun from scorching the foliage. Green-leaved forms tolerate full sun, but are best in dappled shade as very bright conditions can sometimes cause scorch.

    deshojo.jpg

In a garden near me - OK mine then! Acer palmatum "deshojo". This is one of the most stunning and therefore sought after Acers for bonsai. They pop up now and again. Often as grafts which are little use for bonsai but in the garden they are fabulous, so if you see one then buy it. Warning - needs to be kept out of the frost in the winter.

    More Cheap Acers....

This time Morrisons are doing them, various green leaved varieties, up to about 90cm, just £12.

The £8 Asda one that I started this thread with has done great, moved house with me and now perched behind the pond.

No idea where this new one is going. If anyone knows the exact variety of this one, would be good to know. Looks like the leaves might have started off red before going light green.

Thanks for the heads up. I picked one up this evening for my dad. It was the last one in the store.

I can't tell you much about the variety as mine had the wrong sticker on it saying it was a banana plant (it's definitely an acer) and was £8, so i managed to save myself £4 quid result!

That's the wife's motor. Have to tell you that as she hates people thinking it is mine.
