Decking
Grooved or smooth on top?
I need to replace 40 sq metres of rotting grooves up decking, and I read that grooves down lasts longer but grooves up is more slip resistant. I've seen more arguments for both, but I'm wondering what members on here think

Grooves up, looks a bit better ,
Anything like that will get slippy anyway, think it's all down to what you want really

Build my deck with the grooves up, and created a perimeter with the grooves down to contrast.

The grooves are there to stop you slipping when it's wet. It can be lethal. Decking requires "perpetual maintenance." It always rots, eventually. Hard to clean. If you jet-wash it, it can look patchy afterwards
I've crazy York stone....big pieces... everywhere...It's been down thirty years. A jet-wash in the Spring is all it needs."The information's out there,
You only have to let it in." (Jesse Stone)

Have you seen the ceramic tiles that look just like wood? They look really good, a bit more expensive but you don't have to paint every year or replace coz they gone rotten.

Ribbed side up for me , dont treat with anything that sits on top of it and states water proof etc its coloured crap and makes it more slippy .
It does make a difference to the grip , ok so not when wet if both are clean but the yearly slime that gets on it the ribbed side up has a better grip on your trainers just like car tyres do on the road ..
Some of mine is 15 years old but i jet wash it every year , and all i treat with is creosote substitute ........yes its next to the pond but treat on a dry day and let the timber soak in the treatment and no problem .
