Hi Mike, didnt get round to changing the water as I was busy doing the covers on the main pond and still havnt finished as its pissing it down, will change it tomorrow.

However I did check the nitrate with my Nt labs test kit and it looks ok at just over 5 very slightly pink hardly noticeable really.

Dont know what to do for you Mike why not try growing some water cress in the tank, may grow like mad in warm temps and cheap in a supermarket.

Oh wow 5ppm. Living the dream My Cuttlebrook fry.

No there is no flashing and they seem normal just a high reading. Added an overflow today, tomorrow I will add a water feed to have a trickle. Yes I have thought about water cress and it was suggested also by Wendy.. so you just by the leafs in the salad area and chuck it in??

    Thanks Mike,
I have used cress in the past in my showers, what I did was from Asda etc roughly £1a bag throw the full bag in a bucket of water pond or fresh.

Leave a couple of days and it will start to sprout and you will see roots develope
Then put in the pond water but try to keep the leaves dry,you could make a ring from pipe work to float and put them in the middle of it.

Never done this Mike but think it would work and wont do any harm, only used them in a shower between the tiers and they grew like mad, give it a go mate.

I have a recent Showa and hi utsuri in with them My Cuttlebrook fry. I was originally worried about having them in together but they get along fine and the fry have helped with the shy Showa.

The past few weeks the fry have really grown, around 13 weeks old now.

I used water cress in a vegi filter and had to keep trimming the leaves and the roots as they were blocking the outlet which then caused it to overflow and drain the pond. This happened 3 or 4 times so I took it out in the end so keep an eye on it OK. It might be OK in your shower as it will just overflow into the layer below hopefully?

Well I sorted the trickle in and overflow so Iím going to see how that works out over the next few days. I currently have it set to 140ml per minute I have calculated this to be 8.5 litres per hour and 204 per day.

So this will be around 15% per day changed.

All the tricle in out will keep your heater going like the clappers would have thought, got to be done though.

Didnt do any more covers will do tomorrow though.

Put my Christmas decks up outside as it was such a nice day, would normally put them up next weekend but it maybe raining then, not switched on yet though.

Have a read through my heater in the general topics and see what you think.

Just so you know John as I found out today that the NT labs nitrate test kit tests for NO3-N so if you want to know your true nitrate (NO3) you will need to take your result and x 4.43. You may have already know this..

    My Cuttlebrook fry.

I was discussing nitrate with a fellow koi keeper on WhatsApp and he sent me a photo I noticed on the card it said it.

So some may look at that and think 10 or 20 when itís more like between 45 or 90 NO3 ppm

I would say itís between them so around 75ppm

The NT labs results card is mislabelled. The reading actually correlates to NO3 so there’s no need to use a correction factor. They’ve removed the error on most of their more recent kits I believe. Manky knows all about this issue because he tried to tell them about it years ago and they wouldn’t listen

    Thanks for that, how confusing!

I just took a look on their website and it does suggest on there that it is NO3-N??

Are you sure it was not that they were quoting it as NO3 incorrectly before?

    No I’m sure.
Their packaging and labelling people are confused. The chemists have already taken into account the conversion factors for the scale on the results chart. You can confirm this by testing with a different method if you like to convince yourself, but I promise you it’s the case
