Another feeding time video.
They'd already been fed twice within the last hour including 100 grams of mussels.
But how can you resist.....
For anyone who remembers the shiny metallic Ochiba I added in April, it is the black koi! Went completely black within a fortnight, gutted.
The Tancho Showa is the last of last year's fry and seems to be growing again.

Thanks mate.
Funny thing with the Hi Utsuri is that I asked for advice on here before buying it as 15cm Tosai and the consensus was to avoid it due to its skinny body shape and weak speckled Sumi.
2 years on and I think the Sumi is it's best feature.

Just goes to show that it's not always clear which fish will do well when they are really small.
I'm looking out for a pair of Hi Utsuris. So far Gatwick koi seem to have the best choice. Might have to treat myself... again.
If they end up anything like yours I'll be well chuffed.

Only advice I can give is that after researching the best Hi Utsuri breeders before buying one the information was overwhelmingly in favour of Marusei and Shinoda for having the highest quality.
Mine is from Marusei for no reason other than the fact there were no Shinoda ones available at the time, but you should be good to go with Hi Utsuri from either of those breeders.

Thanks for that RS. Good to know. Funnily enough Gatwick have a load of Shinoda hi utsuris.
So does the Sumi develop like a showa I.e. it can come through in places unexpectedly as they get older?

Probably not dissimilar to a Showa, maybe more characteristic of a Shiro, which I believe is essentially a black and white spin off of a Showa.
I've only got the one Hi Utsuri to go on so this isn't a qualified opinion, but for me at least the Sumi development and characteristics have been quite different to that of my Showa and I have found the Sumi on the Hi Utsuri much more stable than on my Showa. On the downside the Sumi tends to be a lot more speckled on Hi Utsuri and it's hard to find one that doesn't have random speckles of Sumi dotted about, but if the body, skin quality and depth of Hi are good then people tend not to notice the speckles.... Exactly as per the positive comments on my one. When I looked at it closely today it does have lots of speckles but they are pailed into insignificance due to the other qualities the fish has.

Thanks for the info. Very helpful.
That's reassuring what you say about the speckles, as all the ones ive seen seem to have them. But I'll try and look past that.
Tbh I'm not trying to win shows, so it's not the end of the world if it's not perfect. But there's no harm in still trying to pick out a stunner.

With you on that.
The only other thing I'll mention, which might be unique to mine but I doubt it, is that since I've had it at Tosai and it was quite heavy with Sumi, no new Sumi has come through and if anything some of it has disappeared, as well as looking less imposing as the koi has grown.
So for that reason only if I was to buy another Tosai I would probably favour the more heavily marked ones on the basis that it will look less imposing as it grows. The ones with little Sumi to begin with may end up looking a bit lacking in Sumi as they grow, but that's only if my one is anything to go by.

Thanks. I'll certainly bear that in mind. As I'm thinking of getting 2, I'm hoping that at least one turns out alright, if not both.

Another feeding time video.
Great info there RS first hand experience is priceless I find it interesting that the sumi did not develop from 15cm tosai in your case considering hi utsuri is a black fish as like the Showa and shiro utsuri where the sumi develops later on.. how long have you had the fish?
I’m also looking for a shinoda at the moment.

It was already covered in Sumi at Tosai Mike, as are most Tosai Hi Utsuri you see for sale.
Think I got mine in 2018, so it would now be Sansai and heading for Yonsai at the end of summer.
It hasn't grown particularly large and probably won't see much beyond 40cm.

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
